On February 28, Sergei Ivanovich Sokolov left us - Honored Architect of Russia, Honorary Builder, Professor, Full Member of RAASN, Academician of MAAM, Laureate of the RF State Prize in Literature and Art.

Sergei Sokolov was a prominent representative of Russian urban planning. His professional career began in 1962 at LenNIIPGradostroitelstvo Gosgrazhdanstroy; in 1983-1986, he headed the Lengiprogor Institute, which was engaged in the development of master plans and planning projects for most of the country's cities. Sokolov was the author and leader of more than fifty major urban planning works in St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Petrozavodsk, Pskov. Developed a master plan for the city of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. At the post of chief architect of Leningrad, in 1986-1992, S. I. Sokolov supervised the creation of the master plan of the city and the Leningrad region for 1987-2005. In the same period, on his initiative, regulations for the protection zones of the central districts of St. Petersburg were developed, and in 1990 the historical center of St. Petersburg and associated complexes of monuments became the first site in Russia to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Subsequently, heading the FISP Department of the Economic Development of St. Petersburg Project, Sergei Ivanovich oversaw the development and implementation of projects for the restoration and improvement of Nevsky Prospect, Palace Square, reconstruction and restoration of the Chapel Yards, the East Wing of the General Staff Building of the State Hermitage.

Sergei Ivanovich, like no one else, understood the nature of life and the development of cities. This made him an irreplaceable expert of the City Planning Council of St. Petersburg. He stood at the origins of modern Russian legislation in the field of urban planning and architecture, the development of the most important legal acts of recent years could not do without his advice and recommendations.

It is difficult to overestimate the contribution of Sergei Ivanovich Sokolov to the development of the national school of urban planning and its regulatory framework. He loved his hometown and, as a professional, did everything to make Petersburg develop harmoniously, preserve its architectural heritage and remain the Russian flagship of urban planning science and culture.
