Situated in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada, renovations were completed in 2015 at Old Settler Pub. The building was adjoined by an open terrace of a cafe, where guests of the institution could be invited only in the summer. In conditions of early cold weather, the veranda, unprotected from wind and precipitation, was not the most profitable solution in terms of business, since it was idle for more than six months a year. To increase the operational period, the owner of the guest house Kent Luke turned to Lumon, where he was offered the option of frameless glazing of the terrace.
This type of glazing is designed to protect unheated rooms from adverse weather conditions. The difference between Lumon technology is that the opening is not closed by double-glazed windows, but by tempered glass sheets 6, 8 or 12 mm thick, which without frames and vertical posts are inserted into horizontal guides fixed to the ceiling and parapet of the restaurant terrace fence. Glasses can be easily moved to one side and in the extreme position they are folded like a book, so you can completely free the opening. For greater stability of the entire structure - when all the doors are open - they are additionally fixed to the lower profile with special latches.
“The glazing of the terrace has increased its usage time from six to ten months a year! - says Kent Luke, - it gave me the opportunity to receive more guests. The fenced space has acquired an additional function - from a street cafe, it has turned into a comfortable party hall that can accommodate large companies. During the hot summer months, the glass panels are usually pushed against the wall, and the terrace still functions as an open-air café hall.
The secret of the reliability of the Finnish Lumon frameless glazing system is its simplicity. The structures do not require service and special maintenance, the system is durable and perfectly manifests itself in countries with a risky climate.
