Svart will appear in Nordland County: on the waters of Hollansfjord, at the foot of Mount Almlifjellet. Its name comes from the nearby Svartisen Glacier, the second largest in continental Norway. Svart in Old Norse meant "black" and "blue", which in this case refers to the dark color of Svartisen's "old" ice.

The unique natural landscape had a decisive influence on the project: in order to preserve it, the hotel is minimally introduced into the environment. It is placed on piles above the water: the A-shaped structure for drying fish became the sources of inspiration (it also became the prototype

memorial to Peter Zumthor in Vardø) and a fishing hut-robu, where half is on the shore and the other is on the water. Like these structures, Svart is mostly made of wood as a material that can be produced and transported to minimize CO2 emissions.

There are walkways between the piles of the hotel, in summer they are used for walking guests, and in winter - for storing boats and kayaks, for which there is no need to build a boathouse. Since the natural environment is too valuable for an access road, it is assumed that guests will only be able to get to the hotel by water, the option of using an eco-friendly shuttle boat from Bodø is being considered.

The future hotel will use 85% less energy than a conventional building of the same size and generate more energy than it needs. Among the “green” components of the project are its circular plan and solid glazing, which allows restaurants, rooms and terraces to receive maximum sun during the cold season, when it rises low above the horizon. At the same time, terraces and roof outreach will protect the interior from overheating in summer, thus eliminating the need for a cooling system. Geothermal wells with heat pumps are planned for heating. Solar panels will be installed on the roof, which, thanks to the polar day, will be able to generate more energy than in the regions located to the south.
