Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg is a transport hub that enables passengers arriving from the north to get directly to the Kirchberg plateau and the Pfaffenthal area without making a detour through the center of Luxembourg. In the same way, travelers from the south can now do without a transfer. The station is also connected to the existing tram line between the city center and the Luxexpo exhibition complex.
The city citadel is located nearby, which influenced the architectural appearance of the station. "Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg" was built on two levels due to the significant difference in relief heights. The lower half is located at the foot of the Grand Duchess Charlotte Viaduct and is connected to Rue Saint-Mathieu by stairs and lifts. It looks like a fortress, but a light roof on thin supports softens its harsh appearance.
In the upper half, facing the Philharmonic and the complex of the European Court of Justice, the highest legal authority of the European Union, an equally light structure is placed directly on the ground: the simpler design of this part of the station is explained by the fact that it does not need to cover the railway tracks.
Both halves of the "Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg" are connected by a funicular with two tracks; such an underground tunnel made it possible to preserve the existing natural environment and footpaths on the surface between the two halves of the station.
