The Architecture Drawing Prize is being hosted by Make and the John Soane Museum in London for the second consecutive year as part of the World Architecture Festival (WAF). This season, architects, designers and students from over 30 countries have applied for awards. The works were evaluated in three categories: digital drawing, freehand drawing and mixed media.
The Grand Prix and victory in the digital category went to a series of drawings by Li Han, one of the founders of the Drawing Architecture Studio in Beijing. The work, titled "Samsara of House No. 42 on Gryaznaya Street," tells about the cycle of events that happened to a residential building in Beijing from 2008 to 2017 - about its spontaneous transformation into a chaotic commercial site, about its subsequent destruction by the authorities and, finally, about its restoration in original residential form. The series explores the relationship between society and officials, demonstrates the difficulties of surviving architecture in a modern, rapidly changing world.
The best in the category "Freehand drawing" was Karleen Kingma of Delft University of Technology with the work "The Tower of Babel of Modernity". The history of the Tower of Babel is projected onto today's polarized capitalist society, the opposition of different layers of which hinders its development. The jury highly appreciated the technique of performance, the elaboration of details, the depth of the drawing.
Finally, Lukas Göbl (Austrian bureau göbl architektur) won in the category "Mixed media" with his work "City of Beautiful Bodies". This is an example of drawing not for the purpose of obtaining the final product, but for the purpose of reflection, creative search.
We also publish five more drawings that have received honorable mentions in their nominations.
