The design competition for the Pokrovsky residential complex on 10 Let Oktyabrya Street in Izhevsk was announced in October by the Udmurt branch of the Union of Architects of Russia. On the site of the former gardening partnership, a block of residential buildings should appear. The participants were faced with the task of thinking over the functional zoning of the territory, proposing a volumetric-spatial solution, emphasizing the town-planning significance of the site and creating a new architectural dominant of the Bummash district, which was built up in the 60-70s of the last century. Among the points of the test task - houses no higher than 25 floors, at least 9 layouts, courtyards without cars, no underground parking, a public garden.

In total, the organizers received 30 projects from architects from Russia, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belgium. The prize fund was 750,000 rubles.

Below is the winning project. The authors are the St. Petersburg creative team MAYAK (Liza Brilliantova, Alexander Meshin, Galina Voitenko, Dmitry Burkalov, Anastasia Ostrova). You can see the projects that took the second and third places, as well as the works of other participants, here.

The architects sought to breathe new life into the Bummash territory, while preserving the authenticity of the area. One of the features of the surrounding buildings - the grid of its axes, differs from the layout of the central part of the city. Among the tasks was not to exacerbate, but to smooth out the existing difference.

The design area is divided into seven quarters - six residential and one reserved for parking. They are located according to the grid of axes of the central part of Izhevsk, which also corresponds to the direction of the main main street 10 years of October. Through all the quarters passes the "big green river" - a park with a large number of lawns, reservoirs, areas for recreation and walking. Residents of nearby areas will also be able to use the park, but the inner privacy of residential areas is preserved. The main point of attraction is the open area in the center of the green artery. Many shops and cafes are planned here.

The facades are finished with light plaster and glazed bricks of white and dark red colors. The picture is complemented by window frames and the surrounding light wood inserts - you might think that the windows of new houses reflected the dreams of summer residents about respectable country villas. It is difficult not to recall both "The Cherry Orchard" by Anton Pavlovich and "Russian Jam" by Lyudmila Evgenievna.

The contextual theme, in a word, is strong, and apparently so that it does not capture the project entirely, the authors “deflect” the plot with scenographic unreality - they turn over most of the “metaphysical” arched windows reminiscent of EURE. The technique in our time, I must confess, is popular: the arches either stand opposite each other, turning into push-pull, then disappear, leaving only fragments of themselves. It seems that everyone is pretty fed up with ordinary arches standing "on their feet" - this is how a facade-reflection appears, a kind of city of Kitezh. Or the image of a Venetian palazzo, rebuilt a hundred times, and even remembered through its reflection in the water. Note that, among other things, the inverted version of the most classic motive makes it frivolous and, as a consequence, unobtrusive.

The contextual reflections were supported by a competition assignment: it even required to keep several plots of the former SNT undeveloped. In the MAYAK project, fragments of garden plots have turned into “open-air museums preserved in their era”. The theme of gardens continues in the creation of hedges of fruit and berry trees on one side of each block. Finally, as required in the assignment, the architects proposed ten planning solutions.
