16 projects of Russian bureaus were shortlisted for WAF 2019. Some of the finalists are participating in the festival for the first time, others have participated more than once and even achieved victories in their nominations. We asked both those and others to talk about why they decided to take part in the WAF, how they chose this or that project and what they plan to focus on in its presentation.

head and chief architect of "Studio 44"

We submitted two projects and one implementation for WAF-2019. All of them were shortlisted. But we cannot say that we have optimistic expectations from the competition this year. Especially when compared with the past WAF, when we showed the Museum of Defense and Blockade, we won in our nomination “Culture. Projects”and hoped to win the final.

However, each of our projects that reached the final is quite interesting and, with the right accents, can make a strong impression on the jury. As always, a lot will depend on the presentation. And we plan to prepare new materials by December, first of all, according to the Pskov project of a residential complex on the banks of the Velikaya River.

There is a difficulty in presenting Russian projects to foreign architects. Those moments and questions that we are struggling to solve are not perceived there at all as something significant. For example, the fact that in Pskov we spent a lot of effort on compliance with the standards and solving issues with insolation will not interest anyone there, as well as the search for a national style with a reference to the Middle Ages and the development of its themes in a modern way. Without understanding the context, without tracing the roots of this architecture, it will be difficult for them to evaluate our project.

The project of the gymnasium named after E. M. Primakov in the Moscow region, it seems to me, has more chances to attract attention, since we are not just following the most current trends in the design of educational complexes, but in many ways we are ahead of them, for example, with our multifunctional common space.

The Central Museum of the October Railway is nominated in the "Display" section and this has its own specifics. It is very important here to show the shape of the building as a derivative of the delivery and movement of such bulky exhibits as steam locomotives and carriages. In other words, in this case, in order to understand the architecture, you need to see a steam locomotive in motion on a transborder or a turntable. We will try to make a short film about this and include it in the presentation for the jury members.

My acquaintance with WAF goes back more than ten years. We took part in the very first festival in 2008 and then entered the short list with the building of the Arbitration Court. In addition, I was a jury member at the first and second festivals. So I know this system well from both sides. But after the first experiments, we did not exhibit our projects and buildings and did not plan to do so until this year.

But the success of the park and the Zaryadye concert hall at MIPIM inspired us to apply for the WAF in the category “Buildings. Objects of Culture.

There is always very strong competition in this section and 2019 is no exception. But it seems to me that we have a chance to compete for victory, first of all, thanks to the strong initial concept of the building, integrated into the landscape and forming zones of increased comfort with the help of a huge glass roof.

A big plus of our concert hall project is its importance for the city as a status cultural platform and a new public space in the very center of Moscow. All other components of the project: architectural image and constructive solutions, acoustics and interior design, interaction of internal and external spaces, accessibility and cultural and recreational opportunities - reinforce and complement the main theme, which we will focus on in our presentation in Amsterdam.

The administration of TINAO put forward our project of the Medical Cluster in Kommunarka in the nomination “Buildings. Medicine”and he was also shortlisted. This project will be a little more difficult. There is no such wow-architecture, but at the same time it meets several trends at once, which, as the experience of recent years shows, are extremely important for the organizers and members of the WAF jury. This is a socially oriented facility, rich in various functions and of great importance for the entire area. Due to the proximity to the Prefecture of New Moscow, a large park that is being built nearby, and an exhibition complex planned here, it will become part of the Kommunarka public center and a key urban development element of the entire zone separating residential areas from Kaluzhskoe highway. In addition to social aspects, the project pays great attention to energy efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Natalia Sidorova

partner of DNK ag bureau

Last year we visited WAF for the first time and as guests. It was very interesting to listen to presentations of colleagues in different nominations. We regretted only one thing - that it was impossible to be in several places at the same time, since often the defenses interesting for us took place at the same time and we had to choose one thing. WAF left a good impression on the high professional level of both projects and their discussion.

We made the decision to participate in WAF 2019 quite spontaneously, literally on the last day of submission of applications. One of the decisive factors was the recently introduced "New and Old" category, dedicated to the renovation and adaptation of historic buildings to new functions. This is one of the important topics for our bureau, and we thought it would be very useful and interesting to place our work in the same context with other projects from all over the world, to bring the problems of concern to us into a general discussion on this topic.

It is difficult to compare projects, each experience of working in a historical environment is unique, each project is an original method of analyzing the initial situation and searching for possible answers to a given problem and an original combination and mutual balance of the new and the old, the author's and the general. And this uniqueness is the unity of all reconstruction projects, regardless of the country in which they were made.

We submitted for the competition the project "Dawn Loft * studio", in which we put a lot of effort, emotions and energy, so we are very glad that it reached the final of the competition. The buildings were initially strongly discordant with the historical environment. Thanks to the emphasis on significant elements of the context, we managed to create "New", but organically growing out of the character of the place. Therefore, in this project, we consider "New and Old" more broadly, not being limited only by the buildings themselves. It will be interesting to see how it all sounds and will be read by the audience at the festival in December.

head of the architectural bureau "Atrium"

We have already visited WAF several times as guests. We watched what and how it was going on there. Each festival, each competition has its own concept, its own rules and its own atmosphere. Each has its own pros and cons. There are no ideal contests and festivals. You need to understand the specifics of the specific and understand what it gives you as a professional and whether you need to participate in it, whether you are ready to play according to the given rules. In general, I cannot say what suits me, how everything is organized at WAF. But, given the international status of the festival and competition, there is no point in ignoring it. We decided to take a more constructive position than skeptical contemplation and criticism and submitted for the competition the project "Park of Future Generations" in Yakutia. This project combines a unique task and non-standard solutions, and besides, it clearly demonstrates our author's approach to architecture. Therefore, we decided to choose him for the first attempt to participate in the WAF competition and it is very pleasant that we immediately entered the short list.

Unfortunately, only realizations compete in the “Landscape” and “Public Spaces” nominations, so we decided to put our project in the “Education” section, which is quite justified, given the large educational program with various functional scenarios, focus on working with youth and the neighborhood of the future park with the University. In addition, although it is called a "park", it is more of an architectural structure, since the climatic specificity of Yakutia requires the construction of structures to create an artificial microclimate that ensures a comfortable stay of people and plant life.

It is interesting that we will compete in this nomination with the Studio 44 gymnasium project. Our bureau also took part in the competition to determine the designer by the Primakov School. It will be interesting to see the presentation of St. Petersburg colleagues. We, in turn, hope, will be helped by the experience of the blitz-defense of the "Park of Future Generations" project in the final of the Yakut competition. There, too, only 7 minutes were allocated to talk about the most significant design decisions. So I think we can handle it.

creative director, chief architect of RTDA company

Last year we took part in the WAF for the first time and were very pleased with this experience. Therefore, we were not faced with the question of submitting or not submitting an application, especially since this year the topic is no less interesting than last. Together with our British colleagues from Allies and Morrison, we have done a unique job for ITMO University - we have developed the concept of the future ITMO Highpark campus, which has already received the A Design Award & Competition 2019.

The university has been preparing for the launch of the project for quite a long time. Various surveys and studies were carried out, the results of which formed the basis of the functional program of the Campus. Having entered the project, we joined the research work. We studied the best world practices and, of course, used our previous experience. This allowed us, together with the Allies and Morrison bureau, to form a common strategic vision for the development of the University as a complex multifaceted structure.

The university willingly shared the results of its own developments. This is very rare. Most often, academic structures do not actively cooperate with architects and share information, but here both the administration, headed by the rector, and the teaching staff took an active part in developing the concept and functional content of the future center.

All the points were thought out about what the infrastructure should consist of, intended for students, teachers and scientists, and how the relationships between its parts should be built so that cooperation and interaction occurs in a natural way. As a result, we were able to develop a harmonious, efficient and flexible enough urban planning structure.

The project includes a number of difficult, but it seems to us very important decisions, for example, minimization of car traffic on the territory. Maximum attention was paid to alternative transport and pedestrian infrastructure.

Communication is the fundamental principle of development, so we paid special attention to the design of public spaces for communication between scientists of different specialties. We understand that large-scale urban planning structures cannot be static, they cannot be designed once and for all. Therefore, we have created a strategy that provides for the possibility of further development and adjustments that are inevitable in the life of any complex system.

It is on these qualities: the concept of a new educational center and a carefully designed, rational and at the same time in many respects innovative urban planning structure, into which the author's architectural solutions will then be built; we want to emphasize the presentation at the festival in December. We very much hope that the jury will hear and appreciate the essence of our idea, which in many respects echoes the trends and themes that are relevant for modern architecture and voiced by the organizers of WAF.

Alexander Tsimailo and Nikolay Lyashenko

co-founders of the bureau "Tsimailo, Lyashenko and Partners"

Our bureau often takes part in competitions, as a rule, these are closed architectural tenders aimed at obtaining a project. The format of the review competition, when prizes are awarded for a project and constructed facilities, has never been our goal. WAF is a special case. In our opinion, WAF is a serious professional competition that deserves special attention. The project is presented to the international expert community of architects and thus emphasizes the role of the architect. Since Vesper applied to participate in the WAF, the shortlist came as an unexpected surprise for us. We were undoubtedly pleased with the opportunity to present the Brodsky bureau and project on the international arena. It is interesting for us to test ourselves, to bring our own in and understanding and being heard and appreciated by our colleagues - architects.

It seems to us that, especially in recent years, it is important to show modern Russian architecture to the international professional community, to try to achieve recognition, since this can positively affect the attitude towards architects in Russia. Even in Moscow, the names of leading Russian architects are practically unknown to the general public, and the general perception of what our workshop is doing is rather negative. The profession is seriously discredited in the eyes of the public and not without reason: a lot of barbarism has been done and bad architecture has been built. Therefore, every success on the world stage is an opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of stereotypes, to reboot the perception of the profession. Obviously, this cannot happen overnight, it is a long cumulative process. But, we believe, you need to start somewhere and very good about It’s just that Russian architects, our colleagues, take part in such events as WAF and win them.

Vesper Press Service The main criteria for choosing a tender for a company are transparent rules for holding and clear criteria for evaluating projects. Last year we applied for the WAF, but, unfortunately, we did not make it to the shortlist. This year we decided to submit the Brodsky house project to the competition and we are very pleased that it made it to the final.

This is a very spectacular and unusual project for Moscow, which arouses great interest among all foreign experts. ArchDaily has already written about him, and the Norwegian company MIR was involved in the creation of the renders, which very selectively chooses projects for work, and the Brodsky house became the first Russian project in their portfolio.
