Saint-Gobain is organizing an international student project competition for the 15th time. The event promotes the concept of a multi-comfortable space - one in which, on the one hand, the most favorable conditions for residents will be created. On the other hand, energy-saving technologies and environmentally friendly materials are used.

This year, the participants had the following tasks:

1. Design a multifunctional development of the residential sector in the urban space of Crescenzago in Milan, where non-residential premises are located underground and on the ground floor, and residential ones above commercial ones. The area is being renovated in accordance with the city's integrated development plan until 2030 (# milano2030).

2. Redevelop three existing multi-apartment buildings to integrate living space with public areas and service areas, and consume 40% less electricity.

ABOUT # milano2030 CONCEPT

By 2030, Milan is expected to have 12,000 residents over 85 and 50,000 youth. To improve the quality of life of Milanese of all ages and to position Milan as an attractive city full of opportunities, the municipality has developed a comprehensive development plan. It must ensure sustainable improvement of urban space both in the center and on the outskirts.

Compliance with plan # milano2030 is one of the criteria by which competitive student projects were evaluated.

More than 2,200 students from all over the world decided to accept this challenge. Among them there are 350 Russians. In April it became known that more than 60 teams passed the national stage, including two Russian, guys from Tomsk and Volgograd. The participants who reached the final went to Milan, where the jury determined the winners.

From a city villa to 5 elements: what Russian students presented

The renovation from the Crescendo team is an attempt to bring the benefits of sustainable country life into the urban environment. The main goal of the "City Villa" is the convenience of residents + ecological balance. In solving the "Milan problem", the students followed the principles of multi-comfort from "Saint-Gobain":

  • Thermal comfort. The project uses awnings and energy efficient glazing to create a comfortable temperature inside the rooms.
  • Acoustic comfort. External galleries are moved to the north, which protects residents from external noise. The elevators in the buildings are removed from the bedrooms. Heat and sound insulation material ISOVER is used in the construction of walls and roofs.
  • Visual comfort. All apartments are located on the sunny side, which provides over two hours of direct natural light. Energy-efficient lighting systems are installed in buildings.
  • Air quality. HVAC systems are moved to separate technical rooms. Systems are used to filter the incoming air.

    These techniques enhance the comfort and well-being of the residents of the Crescenzago development in Milan. To ensure energy savings, buildings have green roofs with solar panels. They are used for charging electric vehicles and for street lighting.

The project not only complies with the principles of sustainable development and the concept of "Multicomfort", but also takes into account the local climatic conditions and peculiarities of Milan. The jury decided that the Crescenzago project from the graduate students of TSUACE is completely ready for implementation. And awarded the creative team Crescendo from Tomsk with a special prize for compliance with the concept of a multi-comfortable space and an innovative approach to energy saving. The team became the first Russian medalist in the history of an international competition.

The team from Volgograd "ARKHKOR" did not receive prizes at the competition, but presented no less professional work in the international final. The VolgSTU student created her project with care for the environment and the comfort of the residents.

The concept is based on the ancient theory of the five elements: water, air, fire, earth and motion. Each element is associated with the main characteristics of the premises - humidity / dryness and warm / cold. Based on these parameters, “multi-comfort solutions” are applied:

  • ventilated facades of buildings made of reflective wood;
  • recreation area: green park with fountains, amphitheater, playground;
  • additional loggias on columns;
  • multifunctional flat roof;
  • underground parking.

Who has won

As the organizer, General Director of Saint-Gobain, Pierre-André de Chalandard, admitted, it was not easy to choose the winners out of 60 projects, since the work of the participants was performed at a high level.

As a result, the seats were distributed as follows:

  • the winner of the competition - the team of the Silesian University of Technology (Poland) with the Co. Living project;
  • the second place went to children from the Abidjan School of Architecture (Cote d'Ivoire) for the Social Dome project;
  • in third place is Bakhrom Khakimov from Brest State Technical University (Belarus) with the "Induction" project. By the way, it is not the first time that Belarusian students are included in the top three (in 2018 and 2012 they were in second place).

Two special prizes were also awarded. In addition to Tomsk residents, the South Korean team was awarded.

I was again very impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants and the desire to use Saint-Gobain multi-comfort solutions. With their help, students design cities of the future that can improve our daily life and that are created with care for the planet. Through the Saint-Gobain Multicomfort competition, the company communicates its values to young architects and builders around the world and thus influences the shaping of the architecture of the future.
