Andrey Nekrasov, architect, professor of Moscow Architectural Institute:

“The first group of graduate students was engaged in design experiments to transform traffic intersections with metro stations into full-fledged public spaces providing comfortable service. The task was to give the same type, faceless spaces, if not unique, then an individual architectural character. This topic was occupied by most of the graduate students who worked in two groups "classics" and "modernists". "Classics" used well-known classical urban planning solutions of the past, adapting them to modern problematic urban planning situations, with the inclusion of the architectural style of the past, combined with modernist solutions. “Modernists” were engaged in the design of public spaces in the areas of transport intersections, trying to turn the faceless, dull random buildings into bright urban ensembles with a memorable plot, cozy, adapted for recreation, entertainment, service and work of the surrounding residents.

As before, the students were interested in the Crimean topic. Diploma-recipient Ekaterina Vostokova has found a new method of reconstruction of the port area of Feodosia, which will become a site for the revival of the historical quarters of Kafa, adapted for tourists and leisure of city residents. The summer amphitheater brought out to the sea will become a symbol of the city and a convenient venue for concerts and performances against the backdrop of a seascape and a new panorama of the city.

The main efforts of the leaders and students of Yulia Morina, Anastasia Talaeva, Maria Korneeva were focused on a complex project that completes many years of experimental design, which began in 2007 with the project of the Musical Theater in Kaliningrad, which won the first prize in a professional competition. In the final project of this year, a variant was developed to recreate the lost buildings of the capital of East Prussia, Königsberg, in the same spatial dimensions, but with the inclusion of modern functions and modern buildings. This project once again draws public attention to the possibility of creating a large cultural, tourist and social center within the borders of the Russian Federation, with unique spatial characteristics, which will cause the active development of the tourism business, trade, and the effective use of cultural potential."

The restoration of the historical center of Kaliningrad is a very topical topic that has been repeatedly touched upon both in educational projects and in proposals from various Russian and foreign bureaus. This project is the final stage of many years of work at Moscow Architectural Institute. As the first stage, in 2007, under the leadership of Andrey Nekrasov, the concept of the Royal Crown opera house was developed, which should be located on the banks of the Castle Pond. In 2008, Moscow Architectural Institute participated in an international seminar on the reconstruction of the city center. The next step was the project "8 quarters of Altstadt", carried out by a group of students in 2017.

Based on the experience of previous years, a project for the regeneration of the historical center of Kaliningrad was created, which provides for the restoration of the historical buildings of a part of Altstadt, Korolevskaya Gora, the Libenicht area and the Zamkovy inclusions and modern function. This approach allows you to revive the look of old Konigsberg and correctly fit it into a modern city with its realities.

An unexpected solution is proposed to recreate the destroyed Royal Castle in the form of a transparent but inhabited mirage building (using the Italian method of "transparent churches"), modernization of the House of Soviets with a seven-storey superstructure and turning it into a modern research and political center of the region and the city, a reorganization system transport, construction of several theatrical structures, of which one - a collapsible summer amphitheater - will be mounted in the courtyard of the Royal Castle.

Regeneration of port quarters in the historical part of Feodosia

Ekaterina Vostokova

The project covers the historical part of Feodosia, which has been occupied by industrial port buildings since the beginning of the 20th century. The aim was to unleash the potential of objects related to the rich history of the city. The author proposes to return the lost position to Feodosia by withdrawing industrial and military facilities, modernizing port activities, increasing the density of urban fabric and placing a spectacular theater in the harbor. All this could bring the tourism and business sectors of the city to a new level.

Thanks to the analysis of the old general plans of Feodosia, the author was able to identify the grid of historical streets of ancient Kafa and propose a scenario for the development of the city center with the inclusion of modern resort functions.

Organization of public spaces in the peripheral territories of Moscow

Piazza Navona Upland District ("Classics")

The main urban planning concept of the "classics" is a new pedestrian boulevard ring with squares near metro stations, based on famous Italian and Greek public spaces. This project involves the reconstruction of the square near the metro station Kakhovskaya with the placement of an Italian cultural center.

The concept was inspired by the Piazza Navona in Rome. Field survey and analysis of historical materials confirmed the hypothesis about the possibility of "transferring" the Italian area to the selected site in Moscow. Although the project is essentially paper-based, this technique demonstrates the benefits of implementing a well-structured core for organizing loose urban areas.

"Zvezdy Square" near Profsoyuznaya metro station ("Modernists")

Anastasia Tryapichnikova

zooming
zooming

The urban planning idea of the "modernists" was to create new public spaces in squares in the area of metro stations, connected by numerous branches of the "tree" of streets. Some of them are automobile ones, to reduce the traffic of the district's city-wide highways; and the main part - pedestrian streets and boulevards, allowing residents to freely get to any point in the district, without going to large highways.

This project is dedicated to the square near the Profsoyuznaya metro station. The author proposes to create here a new comfortable pedestrian space under the working title "Star Square". The new square is formed by the setting of multi-storey buildings, which in the plan form a four-pointed star. The beams of the "star" are directed into the existing quarters and form autonomous areas isolated from traffic activity. These new squares are connected by an underground ring-shaped passage, which in turn is connected to the underground lobbies of the metro station.
