The West Band Museum of Contemporary Art is part of a larger project: after Expo 2010, the former industrial area on the banks of the Huangpu is being transformed into a 9.4 square kilometer West Band cultural district. A public area 8.5 km long is laid along the water, and it is there that the museum is built. It connects the Xuhui area with the famous historic Bund (Bund) embankment, hence the name of the new project - "Western Band".
The museum, with a total area of 22,000 m2, is built on a triangular site where Longten Avenue fits right next to the river. This arrangement made it possible to create a completely "independent" structure, designed for perception from different points of view, open to land, water and all winds.
It has two main entrances - from the city side and from the river - with its promenade and pier. The river entrance is even double: directly into the lobby or through the courtyard with a lowered floor level.
The three volumes seem to be twisted around the axis of the double-height vestibule, which is marked by the roof outlets - below the main roof of the museum, and columns supporting it from the river and the city with reverse tectonics.
Each of the main volumes reaches a height of 17 meters. On the second level, in all three, there are exhibition halls with overhead lights, and on the first, slightly recessed, there is an auditorium for 232 seats, an art studio and an educational center, respectively.
A low, elongated volume of the cafe is attached from the side of the river: panoramic views from the interior are combined there with an observation terrace on the roof, partially covered by the roof of the lobby.
Semi-transparent glass, widely used on facades, is made from recycled materials, it is the result of recycling ordinary glass.
