The competition, announced in June this year, attracted more than 20 applications from architects from 10 countries. The goal was to determine the vector of socio-economic and spatial development of one of the most ancient Russian cities. Special attention had to be paid to the improvement of the embankment.
The finalists who passed the qualifying selection were engaged in the development of projects for three months. All of them made presentations at the open final meeting of the jury (the full recording of the broadcast of the meeting can be viewed here). The victory went to a consortium headed by the design and consulting company Novaya Zemlya, and the second and third places were taken by the consortia of IND architects and the Institute of the General Plan of Moscow. The prize fund of 14.5 million rubles was distributed among the prize-winners.
Let us remind that the initiator of the competition was the charitable foundation “I love Derbent”, the operator was the Agency for Strategic Development “CENTER”. Support was also provided by the government of Dagestan and the administration of Derbent.

First place

Derbent in this concept is presented as "the crossroads of cultures and eras." The project is based on the principle of a “compact city” and a human scale. The architects propose not to divide Derbent into residential areas and an active tourist center, but to evenly distribute the infrastructure in order to make it equally accessible to all residents. This approach will not only ensure the convenience of citizens, but also reduce the load on the transport network. Also among the key proposals are maximum greening, redevelopment of inefficiently used industrial areas, careful filling of historical buildings with new functions, creation of a pedestrian “tourist mile” in the old city and transformation of the embankment into the main public space.

Second place
IND architects + ADEPT + SWA + Knight Frank + RussiaDiscovery
The essence of the concept is reflected in its name - “Derbent spreads its wings”. Derbent, transformed by architects, forms two wings: an oasis city with an innovative agricultural park and orchards in the north and a city of craftsmen with a center of light industries in the south. The project focuses on maintaining a favorable environmental situation: this is the formation of a network of urban gardens, the introduction of electric urban transport, the creation of walking and cycling routes, the organization of a barrier-free environment, which would increase the healthy mobility of citizens.
Among the proposals is also the construction of a cable car, thanks to which tourists and residents of the city could easily find themselves in a mountain relic forest, in a winery or at an ancient fortress.

Third place
Institute of the General Plan of Moscow + "Ginzburg and Architects" + SKTS
The concept assumes a phased development of the city's territory and its economy. At the first stage, it is proposed to work on the infrastructure, transport, reorganization of non-working industries, and the arrangement of the embankment. Further, a new urban area with residential and social and business functions is being created, as well as an agro-industrial complex with a tourist infrastructure. Among the most long-term projects is the creation of an educational center and an innovation hub in the north and an international tourism cluster in the south.
