The building of the Irina Viner-Usmanova Rhythmic Gymnastics Center is in the final of the international MIPIM Awards, which is held as part of the exhibition of the same name in Cannes. The architectural concept of the sports center was developed by specialists from TPO "Pride". The MIPIM exhibition will be held from March 10 to 13, the winners of the competition will be announced on March 12.

Building with an area of 25,700 m2 nominated in the category "Best Sports and Cultural Facility", the Russian project will be competing with buildings from China, France and Great Britain. Note that this year, five Russian projects are presented in the short list of MIPIM Awards. In addition to the Rhythmic Gymnastics Center, a large-scale renovation program, a project for the reconstruction of the Badaevsky brewery (both presented in the category "Best megaproject of the future"), a project for the improvement of the Moscow River ("Best urban planning project"), as well as a hospital in Kommunarka ("Best object in the field of health care "). A complete list of finalists can be found here.

Work on the sports complex began in 2016, and its opening took place in the summer of 2019. The most memorable and, perhaps, the most technically complex element of the structure is the sculpted roof with an area of 15,200 m2… It "covers" the building with a wide wave, falling to the ground at the northeastern end. The most interesting thing is the complex geometry of the structure is "read" from the side of the main facade - here the roof in its shape resembles a fluttering ribbon, a sports equipment of gymnasts.

I must say that for the creation of TPO Pride, the nomination for the MIPIM Awards is not a debut at all, if we talk about industry competitions. The building managed to get high marks from the professional community even at the design stage: in 2016, the Rhythmic Gymnastics Center won the BIM-technologies competition in the BIM-project: sports facilities nomination.

The architectural part was performed in the ARCHICAD program using the OPEN BIM approach based on IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) - an open specification data format. This format allows project participants not only to exchange data, but to work together on the same platform - regardless of what software they use. An “open” approach also ensures transparency in workflows and data integrity.

The Luzhniki Sports Center is considered one of the first successful examples of the OPEN BIM approach in Russia. This is probably why the company-developer GRAPHISOFT decided to make it the symbol of the latest, 23rd version, of the ARCHICAD program. The head of the Russian representative office of the company, Yegor Kudrikov, called the project ambitious - "both in terms of the implementation of the visual external image of the building, and in the application of the most modern approach to design."

But that's not all. Last summer, the project received the Grand Prix of the Aluminum in Architecture competition, which was held within the framework of the international forum AlumForum. It evaluated the possibilities of using aluminum in architecture. In the TPO "Pride" project, the roofing system and its sheathing - the so-called roofing "pie" were made from this material. Riverclack® was responsible for the design and implementation of this multi-component system. The curved roof surface is sheathed with 0.8 mm thick Riverclack® 550 aluminum panels in various shapes - straight, tapered, radius.

For the cladding of the building, GRADAS anodized aluminum cassettes were also used. The aforementioned "gymnastic ribbon" along the main façade is trimmed with cassettes in a bright golden color.
