A glass plant near the Mokhovye Gory railway station in the Borsky district of the Gorky region was put into operation in 1934. In terms of design capacity, the Bor enterprise became the largest in the country: the productivity of its Furco machines (machines for vertical drawing of molten glass mass, invented by the Belgian engineer Emil Furko) was estimated at 10.8 million square meters. m of large-sized glass per year.
Before the war, the Bor glass plant specialized in sheet glass, but due to the threat of occupation by the enemy of the territories where the enterprises specializing in the production of technical glass were located, the Bor glass plant was the closest by geographical location and was quickly re-profiled for the needs of the front. Day and night, the plant's employees worked tirelessly, fulfilling orders from the front around the clock. The victory was forged by the hands of teenagers and women who stood at the machines instead of the men who had gone to war.
Due to rationalization innovations, the plant's employees were able to dramatically optimize the lead time for the glass sets required by the front and for the first time in world practice mastered the production of super-thick 35-mm glass on vertical stretching machines.
The Bor plant became one of the main suppliers of special wartime products: parts of armored glazing for combat aircraft, sight glasses for tanks, porthole glasses for warships, spectacle glasses for gas masks, special mirrors for military equipment. The plant became the sole supplier of signal beacon lenses for the Navy.
For mastering the production of bulletproof glass for military equipment, the Borsk Glass Factory was awarded the Red Banner of the State Defense Committee of the USSR. This banner was awarded to enterprises that made a special contribution to the victory over fascism.
With the victory, the plant returned to the production of window glass. Today it is one of the largest manufacturers of automotive and polished glass in the country, equipped with the latest technology.
We wish all the home front veterans who have valiantly contributed to the cause of Victory health, happiness and joy in life.
Your feat is not forgotten and we sincerely congratulate you on your Victory!
