The new museum with a total area of about 125,000 m2 will be located in Guangming Park, in the eponymous City of Science, which, in turn, is part of the Guangzhou - Shenzhen Scientific and Technological Innovation Corridor. Thus, it will be associated with leading research institutions and universities in the south of China, as well as throughout the country.
The U-shaped plan with a glazed atrium in the center is due to the location of the museum: it opens towards the park, and on the opposite side is almost monolithic, since there is a busy highway. The side facades received separate openings that allow you to look inside.
Particular attention was paid to the resource efficiency of the project. The layout is as flexible as possible to suit any exhibition design or even a change in the function of a building. The volume of the building was even tested in a wind tunnel to account for its interaction with the winds; the level of natural light, air quality and air temperature were also investigated.
As a result, the building's shell will protect it during the very hot and humid summer, the most difficult season in terms of climate in subtropical Shenzhen, where winters are mild and autumn and spring are comfortably warm. High-performance glazing will also provide thermal insulation. Ventilation and lighting systems and a smart program for managing the museum's networks will help save energy.
The construction of the museum has already begun, and work should be completed at the end of 2023.
