A 1,300 m long bridge for cars and trains connects the airport island with the city of Tokoname. In 30 minutes, an air passenger can easily reach the airport from the center of Nagoya.
During the construction of the island, the clayey bottom of the ocean was drained, and steel pipes filled with sand were driven into it, reaching its stone base. They formed a frame for the bulk material of sand and rock. A layer of hardened sand was laid under it. To create the island, millions of cubic meters of soil were delivered from the coast - for this purpose, a whole ridge of hills was torn down. To be able to adjust the position of the airport in the event of a collapse, hydraulically operated telescopic steel supports are located underneath.
The cost of the entire giant project is 5.6 billion euros, which is 13% less than the planned budget.
