The new facility designed by Helmut Yang is the second largest in the world after the Norman Foster Hong Kong airport complex. The dimensions of its huge main terminal are 606 by 210 meters. Its walls are made of glass and steel, and it is covered with a membrane structure. Helmut Jahn designed it together with German engineer Werner Sobek. The useful area of the terminal is 610,000 sq. The control tower of the new airport with a height of 132 m is the tallest building of this type in the world. In general, the buildings of the complex are stretched over a distance of more than 3 km.
The airport was named Suwannapum, which means "Golden Country", as the part of Thailand located on the Indochina Peninsula is called. It is located 25 km from the capital and should completely replace the old Don Muang air port. Suwannapum is designed for 45 million passengers per year. Two new expressways from Bangkok have been paved to it. The $ 4 billion project was the favorite brainchild of recently ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
