The new Penang Global City Center ensemble will include two graceful 60-story towers resembling folded paper birds. They will stand on a huge platform, which will house a congress center, theaters and concert halls, and various infrastructure institutions. It will also serve as a new urban plaza and recreational area, which is especially important as the new complex will be built next to the Penang Hill National Reserve.
Each of the two towers consists of two vertical parts and a horizontal block connecting them. Their glass walls reflect and whimsically distort the views of the city, mountains and sea surrounding the building. But the Asymptote project is carefully thought out not only in terms of a formal solution: it uses the latest technologies in the field of "green architecture". It will include wind turbines and super-thin solar panels built into the façade, which will generate the electricity the building needs; rainwater will be widely used, and a wastewater treatment system is planned.
On a million square meters of usable space, apartments, a hotel, offices, an observation deck, a shopping and conference center, and a performing arts complex are planned.
