The building will consist of two buildings, one of which will house the herbarium of the institute dealing with documentation and study of the world's flora: now it consists of more than 1 million copies, but the new building will have the opportunity to increase it to more than 2 million. laboratories and library. On the roof of this building, called the Archives, solar panels will be installed, and the facades will be partially covered with climbing plants characteristic of Texas. A second building with an educational center, exhibition halls and administrative premises will be adjacent to it. Its features will be a "green" roof and wide terraces that do not interfere with access to the sun's rays.
While Hugh Hardy was involved in the construction project, Diana Balmory was involved in the landscaping of 2.10 hectares of the adjacent territory, bordering the Fort Worth Botanical Garden. She came up with the idea of "woven paths" that combine conventional paved paths with water bodies and shady alleys. They will connect the building of the institute with the entrance and lecture hall of the Botanical Gardens and other key structures nearby.
The opening of the building is scheduled for early 2011.
