In addition to a 60,000 spectator stadium that meets FIFA and IOC requirements, the capital, Addis Ababa, will have a Sports Village with indoor and outdoor pools, outdoor sports grounds, arenas, gyms, dormitories for athletes and the headquarters of the Federal Sports Commission … Cafes, shops, hotels and offices will provide daily activity on campus.
The national stadium is designed to host not only sports events, but also concerts, religious and public holidays. Its facade is reminiscent of traditional Ethiopian grass baskets and coffee beans, the country's main source of income. The arena will be equipped with membrane-type stretch ceilings.
The design itself is simple and environmentally friendly: the stadium bowl will be submerged in the ground, and the soil removed during its construction will go to the stands. Other "green" elements will be "umbrellas" with solar panels shading the space of the complex (similar to those proposed by LAVA for the eco-city of Masdar in the UAE). Lighting elements and fountains will turn on when pedestrians approach, along the way helping them to navigate.
