The building will be housed in a renovated flower market building, a 1960s zinc-sheathed hangar adjacent to the existing museum. Libeskind has been working for this institution for the third time: in 2007 he added a spacious glazed courtyard to the main museum building, his most famous work.
Now we are talking about a building that will accommodate the Academy, library, archive, public spaces, as well as additional storage facilities, offices and technical premises for the museum. From the side of the main building, a new entrance to the building will be arranged, placed in a new volume, reminiscent of a cube placed on an edge and sunk into the ground. Two more tilted cubes will be built in the lobby, which will house the lecture hall and the library. Outside, they will be planked, which should be suggestive of an ark. Glazed openings in the form of the letters Aleph and Bet will be arranged in the ceilings, which will remind of the main - educational - function of the building.
The rest of the premises of the new building will be standard "cells" located around the perimeter of the main space of the building and in its basement. The remaining free plots will be converted into a winter garden.
Project budget - 10 million euros; the wing will open in 2011.
