The new complex is planned to be built in Gongshu, an old industrial area of Hangzhou, which is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation, gradually turning into a convenient quarter for work and life. The architects were faced with the task of designing the most striking in form and innovative and “green” building in its essence, which would literally and figuratively serve as a gateway to the renovated part of the city. JDS gave the building the shape of a hand-written H. The “crossbeam”, arched in an arc, turns the lower part of the complex into a giant arch, and the upper “sticks” are designed as a system of landscaped terraces and gardens, due to which a whole landscape park appears at a height of 10-15 floors with panoramic views of Hangzhou.
The jury unanimously recognized the pedestrian square that the architects propose to organize next to the complex as the strongest and most unusual element of the JDS project. It is deepened below street level and passes through the lower floors of the building - in the resulting passage it is planned to place shops and cafes, which will eventually turn this semi-underground space under the "Gate" into a new center of attraction for citizens and tourists.
The orientation of the building to the cardinal points, the rounded shape of both towers of the complex and the use of a large amount of glass will maximize the use of the natural light resource of all the premises of the Hangzhou Gate. By the way, the complex, in addition to the already mentioned passage and landscaped viewing platforms, will include offices, apartments, restaurants and a post office. The total area of the building will be 23,619 square meters, and the estimated cost of implementation is 22 million euros.
