The building complements the ensemble of the Vidago Palace hotel, built at the beginning of the 20th century. like a royal palace. This large-scale building in the mainstream of eclecticism was immediately turned into a hotel after its commissioning: during the construction the king-customer was killed, and his successor was overthrown as a result of the revolution.
But this did not affect the popularity of Vidago Palace: there are springs of healing mineral waters in Vidago (now they are sold throughout Portugal in bottles under the brands Vidago Salus and Campilho), attracting wealthy visitors from different European countries.
However, by the beginning of the 21st century. the historic "spa" was closed, and for the 100th anniversary of the hotel it was decided to build a new one - designed by Siza. The neighborhood of the brick-pink hotel building prompted the architect to abandon monochrome white for the facades. However, in the interior design, he limited himself to white plaster and light natural stone.
The building is partially buried in the ground so as not to disturb the landscape of the park and not to contrast too much with the richly decorated facades of the hotel.
