The jury awarded the first prize to two participants at once: MOA - Miebach Oberholzer Architekten from Zurich and Kohlmayer Oberst Architekten from Stuttgart. Now they have been asked to finalize their projects, and the final choice of the judge will be made in the coming year. Note that the closed competition was organized by the city Department of Urban Planning and Environment: out of 40 participating teams, eight were winners of the open competition of ideas with the same task that took place in the spring of 2013, and the rest were selected from the candidates who sent their portfolios - they were invited to participate in this selection round. all architects in Europe.
Now the Central Library of Berlin is located in three buildings, but in 2016-2021 it is planned to build a single complex for it with an area of 51 thousand m2 and a cost of 270 million euros (however, the observers will double this amount). It will appear at the southwest edge of the Tempelhof airfield. Recall that one of the oldest surviving airports in the world closed in 2008, and Berliners would like to preserve its field as a park. Now in support of this idea, signatures are being collected, if it succeeds, a referendum will be held, which may slow down or completely cancel the implementation of the ZLB project. Critics of the library project, which will later be surrounded by social and student housing, consider it to be just a "flagship" for the commercial development of the airfield. In their opinion, it would be more correct to build a library where people already live, and on the "wasteland" it will not be so in demand.
However, the authorities are counting on attendance comparable to the Parisian Center Pompidou. In addition, the Tempelhof S-Bahn and Metro stations and the A101 motorway are close by, making it easy to get to the new library.
The work of the winners, KohlmayerOberst Architekten, who got into the number of participants thanks to the portfolio, is an elongated concrete volume, a "megastructure" with a flexible layout. The structure is not inferior in expressiveness to its neighbor, the terminal of Tempelhof Airport - a monument of the 1920s - 1930s.
The design of the second MOA winners (they had previously won the idea competition) is a 74 x 120 m glazed block pierced by 10 vertical “rods”: the composition, built on the repetition of simplified elements, gives the impression of power, efficiency and flexibility, which allowed the jury compare it to a "culture machine."
Third, fourth and fifth places were taken by Max Dudler, wulf architekten and Cruz y Ortiz Arquitectos, respectively. Honorable mentions include gmp, Ortner & Ortner, and three idea winners.
