So far, we are talking about the northern part of the airfield, which runs along the Columbia-Damm highway. Hence the name of the future area for 5,000 people - Columbia Apartments. This competition of ideas, like the next two on the rest of the Tempelhof area, is intended primarily to outline the prospects for creating links between new housing estates and existing developments.
The jury did not seem "convincing" any of the works presented for the competition, so the first place was not awarded, but three second prizes were awarded at once.
The Berlin workshop Urban essences, together with landscape architects Lützow 7, proposed to build up an area of 19 hectares as densely as possible and turn Columbia Damm into a boulevard surrounded by small ponds, residential areas, innovative car parks and public institutions. It is also possible to build an exhibition hall and a football stadium there.
The Graft workshop and the landscape bureau Kiefer propose to outline the edge of the airfield with an alley and to pay great attention to environmental neutrality - both in terms of building materials and in terms of using the existing airport buildings, in particular the radar tower, to generate renewable energy.
London bureau chora and landscape architects gross.max from Edinburgh are planning to go even further down the green road. Their project involves equipping the area with wind turbines and solar panels, extensive use of geothermal energy and biogas.
The name of the future author of the general layout of the Tempelhof territory will be announced only in the second half of this year, and the project itself can only be expected by 2011.
