The structure, tentatively named The Circle, is supposed to be erected directly next to the airport terminal, at the foot of a small hill. Its rounded plan, encircling this hill, includes not only two hotels, offices and a variety of service establishments, but also a vast green space.
The competition was held in three stages, and the process took the entire 2009. As a result, out of 90 workshops from 12 countries of the world, 5 bureaus reached the final, and Riken Yamamoto became the winner. His project "Divers (c) ity" is a volume enclosed in a glass shell that breaks up into separate rectangular blocks - a reference to the generalized image of the city. Inside will be created "streets" and "squares", a variety of public and private spaces, which should give the layout of the building the necessary flexibility. The jury noted the "Swiss restraint" and "atmospheric" of Yamamoto's work.
The area of the future construction is 200,000 m2, the budget is about 1 billion Swiss francs. Construction is scheduled to start in 2012.
The second place in the competition was taken by Zaha Hadid, the third - by Xaveer de Geyter, the fourth - by the Asymptote bureau.
