The terminal yard is a narrow space 1 km long, where passengers arrive and leave by different types of ground transport: buses, taxis, private cars. Now it is an unpleasant place full of noise and exhaust fumes, although it creates the first and last impression of the airport among travelers.
Frankfurt Airport, despite its size and role as the most important European transport hub, is surrounded by dense forests. This environment inspired the architects to green the Terminal 1 building itself. Its new green façade should be the first step in transforming the courtyard into a full-fledged public space.
In addition, a lightweight ceiling will be erected to protect passengers from bad weather, while providing natural light and ventilation. Passengers will be provided with two levels of movement, as well as bridges directly connecting the terminal with the parking lot.
There are two underground levels under the courtyard: a shop and a train station. To prevent new construction from interfering with their work, the architects placed the entire weight of the floors and bridges on tree-like supports to minimize interference with existing structures.
Both the supporting structure and the cladding will be made of modular parts, which will speed up the construction process.
