The project with a budget of 90 million euros, the implementation of which took 2 years, is only part of a large-scale modernization program for the station and its surroundings. As conceived by Zechner & Zechner, the stop of 4 tram lines is now hidden underground, freeing up space on the surface, and a transfer hub for city buses has also been created.
The bus stop is the most visible part of the reconstruction. It is covered by a huge steel canopy in the shape of a ring, nicknamed by the townspeople "the golden eye": its lower surface reflects what is happening on the ground as in a curved mirror, and the upper one is covered with golden metal.
At the underground tram station, where citizens go down stairs and escalators, only the platforms are blocked: the absence of a real roof provides it with natural light and makes emergency fire ventilation unnecessary: there is nowhere for smoke to linger.
The walls are clad with fiber-reinforced concrete panels in three shades of gray, imitating rock. This motif of broken stripes continues upstairs, in the pavement and landscape design of the station square.
The project also improved the bike path leading to the station and provided a covered parking lot for bicycles.
