Australia's second largest city unveiled a $ 19.1 million plan to green urban environments, including rooftops. The news came days after the city council approved plans to build the first "roof farm".
The municipality already has 40 "green" roofs, and over time there will be many more. The council plans to spend $ 1.9 million on the implementation of the first year of the strategic plan. The budget also includes drastic changes in water management, with the city planning to roll out a $ 4.2 million rainwater harvest and reuse plan to protect its famous gardens from drought.
Acting Lord Mayor Arron Wood said the investment will help the city conserve water as the climate continues to change and the city's average temperature rises from year to year.
“This summer was the hottest in Melbourne's history, so it's important that we conserve water. That's why we're investing $ 4.2 million in our strategy to harvest and reuse rainwater across the city. Runoff and rainwater recovery projects will protect our gardens from drought and extreme weather.”
The budget commitment also includes a set of measures to convert urban facilities to fully renewable energy as part of the project. The energy, which will come from the 80 MW wind farm, will be directed to street lamps, recreation centers, libraries and town halls.
