The building, designed by Denton Corker Marshall, replaced the temporary 1987 pavilion designed by Philip Cox and became the newest building in the Giardini. Before that, the "youngest" pavilion there was South Korea (1995).
The Australian Pavilion is located on the banks of the canal that crosses the garden. The console of the 2nd floor is facing it, under which there is a path along the water. Black granite facades can be “opened” as needed, folding the panels like shutters - or small consoles.
Inside the black granite shell is a white, neutral exhibition space that will host the Australian National Exposition at the 56th Art Biennale from 9 May 2015: Wrong Way Time, a multisensory installation by Fiona Hall.
