The goal of the gmp bureau was to fulfill seemingly opposite requirements: on the one hand, to carry out careful modernization and conservation of the architectural monument, on the other, to make possible the further multipurpose use of the stadium, in particular, to create a first-class football field for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
All new parts of the building have been hidden underground outside the stadium so that its appearance remains unchanged.
The main element of the restructuring was the new overlap of the stands, a complex combination of membrane and hinged cantilever construction. It brings a new dimension to the rigidly tectonic ensemble of the 1930s, often referred to as a paragon of "totalitarian architecture." At the same time, the canopy is interrupted over the Marathon Gate, which retains the main urban development axis, which runs from the Olympic Square to the Belfry of the stands of the Mayfeld field.
