If you stare at the green roof for 40 seconds, you will have a significant increase in concentration. This conclusion was reached by a group of Australian scientists from the University of Melbourne. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology.
150 students participated in a boring event that could not keep their attention. When numbers flashed on the computer screen, the students had to press a key every time - except for the appearance of the number three. In the middle of the experiment, they were given a 40-second break to see a picture of the life of the metropolis from a bird's eye view. Half of the group looked at the blooming meadow on the roof, and the rest looked at the same perspective, only the roof was dull, bare and concrete. After the break, the students looking at the green roof made significantly fewer mistakes and showed superior concentration of attention, unlike other participants in the experiment.
The study's lead author, Dr. Keith Lee of the University of Melbourne School of Science, believes that looking at a green roof can invigorate tired office workers and help strengthen mindfulness.
“We all knew green roofs were good for the environment, but now we can say that, among other things, they help raise awareness. Just imagine the positive impact that thousands of employees will feel in the offices adjacent to the green roof,”summarizes Keith Lee.
According to the researcher, a person will work better if for a minute (or even less), as a rest, he looks at an image of nature. These small breaks can be spontaneous. As Lee says, “micro-breaks” are very important for office workers to avoid fatigue, and looking at a green roof can help maintain high productivity throughout the day.
Lee believes the study will provide additional impetus for urban greening. “City planners around the world are considering the benefits of green roofs, and we hope that the future of our cities will be very green,” she said.
