The 4th International Green Roof Congress, organized by the International Green Roofing Association (IGRA), has started in Istanbul. The main venue for the event will be the Zorlu Center at the new Raffles Hotel.
Within the framework of the congress, the latest achievements in the field of roof gardening, the latest technologies and the most non-standard solutions will be presented. In megacities, there is less and less space for greenery. Parks and squares are being replaced by dense buildings. Greening of roofs, according to the organizers of the congress, can at least partially compensate for this deficit in the natural environment. That is why the congress is held under the motto “Explore nature on the rooftops”. In addition, green roofing significantly improves the quality of architecture, taking it to a new level of quality and sustainable construction. At the same time, the cost of construction practically does not change. As the manufacturers of such roofs assure, it is not more expensive to set up a roof garden than at the foot of a building, given the high cost of land in any major city.
For two days, on April 20 and 21, well-known specialists in the field of greening roofs, engineers and world-famous architects will make reports in Istanbul. Also, during the event, it will be possible to get acquainted with a number of unique and even revolutionary projects and buildings created in different parts of our planet. We present only a few of them.
Bosco Verticale Towers or "Vertical Forest" in Milan
The project was carried out by the famous Milan architectural studio Stefano Boeri and is a pair of high towers with a height of 119 and 87 meters, comfortably integrated into the chamber environment of the picturesque Italian city. The uniqueness of the project is that the towers are more reminiscent of giant trees or sheer cliffs, densely overgrown with greenery than man-made buildings. The facades are densely covered with terraces, their total area is more than 8,900 m2, on which a huge number of large-sized trees are located. More than a thousand species of plants are presented here, placed in tubs of soil, which, in turn, are tightly fixed with ropes on the terraces. Interestingly, the nature of the facades will change depending on the season - green in summer and golden in autumn.
Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore
Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore has already become one of the city's main attractions. In shape, it resembles a curved boat, which, by the will of fate, ended up at an altitude of about 200 meters, on top of mighty rocks. The cliffs here depict three unusual skyscrapers supporting the boat from below. And the boat itself is nothing more than a skypark - one of the largest on earth. This is 9,900 m2 of landscaping, water spaces, including a spectacular pool, from where you can admire the futuristic panoramas of the city from a great height. These are gardens, jogging tracks, restaurants and spas - all under the sky.
Zorlu shopping and entertainment center in Istanbul
The center was built in Istanbul in 2013 by Tabanlıoglu Architects and Emre Arolat Architects. An unusual building is located on the European side of the strait next to the Bosphorus Bridge. The peculiarity of the project is that all the volumes included in the complex are based on a single green platform. On it you can see a variety of plants - from wildflowers to endemic species. Add to this a range of large terraced green roofs with gardens, which offer stunning views of the Bosphorus, and the painting takes on a complete look.
International boarding school in Dilijan
A new school was opened in Armenia, in one of its most beautiful cities, located high in the mountains - in Dilijan. The architectural project of the school was developed by the British bureau Tim Flynn Architects, and the international holding RD Group was engaged in adaptation and implementation. The main task of the designers was to create the most comfortable conditions for studying and permanent residence here for students from all over the world. The project is harmoniously integrated into the environment. Its main motto is environmental friendliness and energy efficiency. Most of the facades are made of tuff, a stone quarried in the region. The rest of the space of the facades is occupied by glazing and living green walls, which is why the light educational buildings acquire a special natural look, echoing the wooded mountain landscape. The roofs of all buildings are landscaped and from above resemble forest sunny glades.
Investors all over the world have long recognized that maintained roofs not only increase the value of a building, but also increase its attractiveness.
In addition to presentations of the most famous and complex projects with green roofs, the Congress, as always, will discuss issues of plant breeding for green roofs, taking into account the climate of different regions of the world. There will be multi-sessions about renovation programs with green roofs in the cities of Chicago, Stuttgart, London and how Hamburg manages to launch a green roofs support program with a budget of 3 million euros, announced at the 3rd World Congress in 2013. Municipal green strategies will be described in reports, which we will later acquaint the readers of Archi.ru with.
