The author of the future building was made by the REX bureau, which won the corresponding competition in 2015 - after the customers abandoned Frank Gehry's project. The Performing Arts Center was part of the master plan for the WTC by Daniel Libeskind, but it has only come to fruition now: a $ 246 million building will appear in Manhattan by 2020.
Its façade will consist of thin marble panels measuring 1 mx 1.5 m, "laminated" with glass and reinforced with steel profiles. The stone will be delivered from the Vermont quarry, where the material for key structures in Washington was mined: it is a reference to the significance of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack in the history of the United States. During the day, the marble Center of Perelman will look monumental, and at night the translucent facade will turn it into a cube shining from the inside with gold.
The elegant exterior will contrast with the "work" interiors: steel walls, concrete trusses, perforated plywood. The Perelman Center will stage drama, opera and ballet performances, hold concerts and film screenings. The main task of the architects was to create optimal conditions for experiments for directors and performers, so three halls - for 499, 250 and 99 spectators - as well as a rehearsal room can be connected in 11 different configurations thanks to guillotine acoustic walls and a variety of movable partitions. You can also change the position of scenery storages, corridors and other ancillary rooms, arranging an impromptu foyer or changing the stage and spectator rows in places. All of this is located on the upper level of the building, in the Play area - "plays".
Below is the level of the "executor" - technical rooms, which are usually removed underground or to the rear facade. But at the Perelman Center, the architects decided to give the entire production team natural light and spacious rooms.
At the very bottom is the social level closely related to the urban environment. They will set up a bar-restaurant, which, if desired, can be used as a cabaret, dance floor, for performances, or as a "living room" for the townspeople - for example, during elections. Also a gift for New Yorkers will be a wide entrance staircase-amphitheater and a sculpture garden.
