On November 30, the winners of the international architectural competition Archchel 2020 were announced in Chelyabinsk. Participants of the competition, jury members and representatives of the regional government gathered at the ceremony. The organizers of the competition were the Agency for International Cooperation of the Chelyabinsk Region, ChRO "Union of Designers of Russia" and the regional branch of the Union of Architects of Russia. Within the framework of the competition, for three months, Russian and foreign architects prepared sketches of objects that will become key points during the SCO and BRICS summits in 2020. The participants were faced with the task of not only presenting a visual solution to the Miass River embankment, the congress center and the airport, but thereby proposing a concept for a new image of the city. The competition received 350 applications from specialists from 8 countries. As a result, the organizers received 117 works, which were presented to the jury members on tablets.
“Today we will announce the winners in each nomination, the prize fund, as originally announced, amounted to 7 million rubles. All projects were encrypted with a certain code, respectively, the representatives of the jury retained objectivity in making decisions. I am glad that among the winners there are representatives from Chelyabinsk, architects from Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg, as well as from other countries,”said Olga Aleinikova, director of the Agency for International Cooperation of the Chelyabinsk Region, at a press conference before the event.
Not only the decision of the jury, but also the opinion of the townspeople will be able to influence the future appearance of Chelyabinsk: for this, a popular vote will be organized in the second half of December.
We present the projects that have won prizes.
Airport
First place
New aviation (St. Petersburg)
Since the airport is the face of the city, and Chelyabinsk is one of the major metallurgical centers of the country, the winning architectural concept was based on the image of a flowing red-hot metal. The new terminal and the existing buildings are united under one roof, which gives the air terminal complex integrity and a complete look.
*** Second place
Daniel Dendra, AnotherArchitect (Berlin)
The source of inspiration for this project was another visiting card of Chelyabinsk - the Ural Mountains. Hence the shape of the new terminal building. In addition, the triangle is often found on the coats of arms of the cities of the Chelyabinsk region, so the airport will be able to represent not only its capital, but the entire region.
*** Third place
Escher (Chelyabinsk)
This is the only project developed by Chelyabinsk architects that was included in the number of prize-winners. The authors propose a single terminal for domestic and international flights, and the dominant feature of the complex will be the high-rise building of the Cosmos Hotel.
*** Congress Center
First place
Design workshop "Arena" (Moscow)
The location of the complex on the site prompted the natural course of the Miass River - the complex connects the two banks of the river along the shortest path. The building, 150 meters high, should become one of the city's centers of attraction. The complex is divided into two volumes, not only visually, but also functionally. The main volume contains a multifunctional concert hall and an office center with a hotel complex, and the small one houses the media center.
*** Second place
Andrey Ukolov (St. Petersburg)
The two buildings of the complex - the congress center and the exhibition center - are connected by two pedestrian bridges. The Congress Center is conceived as a vertical city - it includes a base and two towers. The author forms an ensemble of various volumes, and none of them dominates over the others. The area near the congress center can be used for social events and temporary exhibitions.
*** Third place
Inros Lackner Blr (Minsk)
The architectural ensemble has three main volumes. The congress and media centers are located on opposite banks, and the “bridge” that connects them is the office and hotel complex, “floating freely” over the water surface.
The authors propose to turn the territory adjacent to the congress center into a vast park area.
*** Embankment
Second place
Architectural group "In.form" (Yekaterinburg)
It is proposed to build an open-air swimming pool and a boat station on the embankment. “There are recreation areas, areas for physical activity. In the light of the latest architectural trends, there are many bike paths,”says the author of the project, Vadim Ganiev.
*** Second place
Mikhail Chaplygin (Novosibirsk)
On the left bank of the Miass, Mikhail Chaplygin creates a pedestrian esplanade, which unites large shopping malls, cultural and administrative buildings and organically passes into a pedestrian bridge across the river. The building of the congress center, according to the author's plan, should become one of the brightest objects in the center of Chelyabinsk. The project proposes to use river water for artificial reservoirs and pools with fountains. For this purpose, the territories adjacent to water bodies have been lowered to the level of one meter from the surface of the water, so that the townspeople and guests of the city have the opportunity to feel its coolness with their hands. Among other things, this concept uses a rich palette of landscape art techniques.
*** Third place
Valentina Shalygina and Anna Zhang (Moscow)
The general principles that the authors tried to adhere to were zoning of territories, the development of engineering, transport and social infrastructures. A public area will be created on the embankment, where its guests are offered many programs for recreation, and the green center of the city will be formed.
