The competition for projects to create new workspaces at the enterprises of Rosatom State Corporation started in December 2013. We have already written about its finalists and participants. The best projects were planned to be implemented on the pilot sites of the corporation, and then, having finalized and adapted, introduced as a standard. This material is about what we managed to realize during this time. We will also tell you why the second stage of the competition was launched and what awaits its winners.
Rosatom includes more than 350 different enterprises: from nuclear power plants and icebreakers to small laboratories, from chemical-technological plants and processing plants to engineering centers and research institutes. Many of them, due to their advanced age, do not meet the modern standards of office and industrial spaces. Moreover, Rosatom positions itself as a high-tech and innovative corporation. This was the reason for the launch of the competition "New workspace of Rosatom" in 2013. At that time, not only Russian architects and designers took part in it, but also bureaus from France, Germany, USA, Mexico, Argentina, Thailand and other countries. In total, the organizers received 837 applications. Based on the results of the competition, which later became only the first stage of a long-term project, not only projects for implementation were selected, but also a rating of architectural and design bureaus recommended for further cooperation within the framework of the corporation's workspace renewal program was compiled.
The list of sites to be updated following the results of the first stage includes not only offices, but also laboratories, workshops, entrance lobbies, conference rooms and recreational spaces. The basic principles that unite implemented and underway projects are zoning instead of fencing, transparent or translucent partitions and doors, transit routes instead of corridors, sound-absorbing panels on walls and ceilings in meeting and lounge areas, coffee points and small recreational corners, mobile modular furniture, multifunctionality of various zones, landscaping (including vertical), wall infographics and multimedia screens instead of billboards, modern materials and laconic finishes, well-ordered storage systems. Despite the fact that different bureaus have worked on the interiors of the sites, the common features of the corporate style are immediately read in the design - the use of a blue and white scale, the design of the navigation system in the form of pictograms, the active use of glass in interiors, the use of elements associated with the nuclear energy industry in the design. …
The projects that have already been completed are presented below.
Zelenograd Electrochemical Plant
Milodamalo Studio
Many interior solutions used here can be easily replicated at other Rosatom enterprises. Moreover, variability is permissible, for example, in the choice of individual materials or furniture - the general idea and style will not suffer from this. The project affected the central entrance group, the conference room and the adjacent lounge area.
Engineering plant in Elektrostal
Architectural bureau "Anton Mosin & Partners"
The architects were faced with the task of transforming the space of the workshop, built in the 1970s. The authors managed to eliminate visual chaos, implement effective zoning, equip a modern office, and create spaces for relaxation and communication.
Mikhail Ukhov, Advisor to the General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom: “Despite the fact that almost all pilot sites we have turned out to be beautiful and convenient for use, this is not the main task of the project. The maximum task is to make the workspace another tool for the development of the corporation. The workspace and human capital are interdependent. The management of Rosatom has repeatedly stated that in our knowledge corporation it is people who are the most important and key resource. And the workspace can both help the development processes and slow them down, preventing the new from emerging, the best being realized. Our goal is to make the workspace relevant and flexible. Make it not a factor of limitations, but an additional resource, both for the management and for each individual employee."
Mining and chemical plant in Zheleznogorsk
Dmitry Emelyanov
This project is an illustrative example of the integration of individual elements of the past interior into a new one. The architect preserved a brick wall in the former assembly hall of the plant, which now houses a multifunctional office space, executive offices and a transformable platform for negotiations and meetings.
NIKIET named after N. A. Dollezhal
Architectural bureau "Archkon"
The site of the scientific office of physicists of JSC NIKIET has become the smallest of the converted spaces - 94 sq.m. It managed to accommodate 20 separate workplaces, a meeting room, a storage system and a horizontal bar.
Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant
Milodamalo Studio
The site at NZHK is, on the contrary, the largest in the project (4392 sq. M). It is designed in a strict, laconic style, with an emphasis on functionality.
In total, according to the results of the first wave of the competition, 10 sites were reequipped. Another 9 projects are underway. But, since there are still a lot of spaces in need of renovation, it was decided to extend the project. In the spring of this year, Rosatom, together with the ProjectNext agency, launched the second stage of the competition, applications for participation in which are accepted until June 26. In addition to monetary prizes, the winners will have the opportunity, on a contractual basis, to participate in the development of the final version of the Rosatom State Corporation workspace standard.
