In the first month of summer, the "piggy bank" of Gorky Park was replenished with another interesting space - an open sports ground with a pavilion called Box MSK. The competition for the concept of a multifunctional sports center, organized by Nike and conducted by Strelka KB last year, was won by the architectural bureau KOSMOS.
The brief for the competition and the functional model for the competition were developed by KB Strelka with the informative support and direct participation of Nike specialists. The development of design documentation for the facility and supervision over the construction was carried out by Strelka KB in collaboration with KOSMOS and with the participation of the Werner Sobek Moscow design bureau.
The site of the sports center is located between the Bolshoi Golitsynsky pond and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. The pavilion - NikeBoxMSK - is the compositional center of the object, made of glass and light metal structures, which at the same time refer to the stained glass greenhouses of classic park structures and functional urban structures. The pavilion is shaped like an open box, one of the “covers” of which goes down to the ground. On this inclined plane, there are stairs that lead to the exploited roof.
The space of the pavilion is easily adaptable to different functions: lectures, master classes, exhibitions and trainings can be held here
The active red color of the covering around the pavilion communicates some aggression and pressure accompanying the sport. There is a football box with a tribune, a basketball court, a running club base and a separate training area. All areas are united by a small amphitheater, which follows the relief and serves as a resting place and an observation point for sports games.
The playing fields - football and basketball, are completely covered with graffiti, the style of which is reminiscent of both socialist realism posters and American Marvel comics. Sport unites. Coincidental or not, the combination of red and white, as well as the cells of aluminum structures with bridges, are read as the identity of the famous institute. A huge logo on the roof of the pavilion, as well as branded inscriptions on the roof of the houses - “never ask” and “just do it” “speak for the customer”. According to the architects of the KOSMOS bureau, the concept is inspired by “modernist new buildings and industrial suburbs”.
It turned out to be a truly multifunctional space, comfortable both for athletes - both beginners and professionals, and for the townspeople having a rest in the park. By design, the Nike Box MSK is designed to function and host a variety of activities all year round.
