The 10-kilometer line allows you to get from north to south of Amsterdam in fifteen minutes. Its seven new stations are conceived as an additional layer of urban space: this is reflected in their tight connection with the surface. This connection is created by the widespread use of natural light underground, "open" entrances, from where the paths are immediately visible, and made by the shortest path from the outside to the platform. The authors of the project put a lot of effort into making it easy for passengers to figure out where to go - intuitively choosing the right direction. The proximity of the stations to the city makes them safer and easier to operate.
The construction of the stations (each of them with an area of about 10,000 m2) has been going on since 2003: the process was influenced by both saturated with water, unstable soil, and the cultural layer of the historical part of Amsterdam, where the first houses on stilts were due to the same soggy soil. - appeared in the XIII century, and the city arose around 1300.
The silver-gray "urban" color is created by materials that are easy to maintain and replace. The use of transparent panels and thoughtful lighting make the stations safe and “understandable” for the townspeople. The basic principles of the project were laid back in 1995 when Benthem Crouwel won the corresponding architectural competition.
Each station received one or more works of art created especially for it by Dutch and foreign artists. For example, at the Central Station, the video art of David Klarbaut includes a weather forecast, and on the Weiselgracht, a "light" portrait of the Dutch singer and actor Ramses Schaffi by Marian Laper was installed. The walls of the Rokin platform hall by Daniel Devar and Gregory Gikel depict archaeological finds made during the construction (a mini-museum of such items is also located there). On Airpaplane, Gerald van der Cap's photographs imitate film noir.
