Satterfield & Pontikes Construction has completed a complete refurbishment of Building 12 of the Johnson Space Center (JSC), built in the 1960s. The aim of the modernization is to bring it into line with modern building codes and standards, as well as equip it with advanced components.
The NASA Center near Houston (Texas) is a complex of hundreds of buildings located on an area of 650 hectares. It is engaged in the development of manned spacecraft, the training of astronauts, as well as direct control of space flights. This exploitable roof is known to be the first in JSC, and its construction allowed over 70,000 plants to be planted on the roof.

Building 12 has been supplemented with many energy efficient and environmentally friendly features: solar panels, wind turbines and double windows have been installed. Recycled building materials were used, and specialists also installed an innovative energy-saving lighting system.
Since the total weight of the necessary nutrient substrate for this green roof was 550,000 kg, preliminary reinforcement of the load-bearing structures of the complex was envisaged.
According to NASA experts, operated roof with plants significantly increases the energy efficiency of the building, which now requires less energy for heating and air conditioning. It helps to reduce storm water runoff and eliminate the heat island effect. In addition, the installed rooftop wind turbines are expected to be able to generate up to 3,100 kWh of renewable energy annually.
