The Deutscher Landbaukultur-Preis has been awarded for the second time ("premiered" in 2016). Its aim is to celebrate the quality of the building and architectural culture (Baukultur) in a rural context, reflecting the desire of the land-based customers to optimally combine old and new, life and work. The initiator of the award is the Stiftung LV Münster Foundation, supported by the unions of German architects and landscape architects and the German Peasant Union. The winners this year were awarded by the Minister of Agriculture of the Federal Republic of Germany Julia Klöckner. The main prize was 10,000 euros, the winners of the incentive prizes received 4,000 euros each, the special ones - 2,000 euros. Deutscher Landbaukultur-Preis honors customers and architects at the same time.

The main prize went to Dürschinger Architekten for the renovation of the Stiegler family estate in the village of Gonnersdorf near Nuremberg. A fire in 2014 completely destroyed all the buildings of the peasant farm, except for the sandstone forge. New functional structures of modern forms made of traditional materials - wood and stone - form the composition of the "three-sided" courtyard characteristic of this area, successfully fitting into the context.

Honorable Mention

The house on his father's allotment (allocated after the division of land between him and his adult sons) in Fichtach in the east of Bavaria has been empty since 1963 and managed to turn into ruins. Munich architect Peter Heimerl (his concert hall in Bleibach we

published here) reconstructed a building of wooden blocks on a granite base, with a stone barn and a wooden barn - with the help of concrete and glass. The customer was Hauspaten Bayerwald, founded by Heimerl, which preserves and develops the architectural traditions of the Bavarian Forest region (this is where Fichtach is located and the architect himself was born).

A new brood pigsty has appeared on the May family's bio-farm in Junkershausen on the northern border of Bavaria after a fire in 2015 that destroyed all outbuildings. Now it has been moved half a kilometer south of its original location. The completely wooden building by the architect Holger Fenchel with walk, green roof and a platform for visitors was liked by the jury for its exemplary implementation and composition.

The heritage site, the Kinzlerhansenhof estate in Schönwald near Freiburg (Black Forest), was originally built in 1591. Its restoration and adaptation for new use by architects Gössel + Kluge (who also ordered) was also awarded the Deutscher Denkmalschutzpreis (Deutscher Denkmalschutzpreis). The building houses living quarters, offices and an event area, including convertible spaces in the roof volume. The use of only originally used materials (wood, granite, clay) is combined with the principles of energy saving (EnEV standard - geothermal system, solar panels, etc.).

The half-timbered house of a tenant farmer's family in Lengerich between Münster and Osnabrück in northern Westphalia was built at the end of the 19th century and included a barn and a stable. The building has now become fully residential, and the jury liked that the careful modernization by Deeken Architekten took into account the original character of the house and the proximity to an old water mill and a farmhouse with a canal - a component characteristic of the area.

A completely modern interpretation of the "house on the father's allotment" type on the Rückamp farm in Enniger in northwest Westphalia emerged across the courtyard from the main building. The barrier-free building is made of clinker: this material, like the folded silhouette of the roof, responds to brick and gable roofs typical for local buildings (the farm itself is no exception). The authors of the project are hartmann | s architekten.
