The exact date for the Wienerberger Brick Award will be announced later, but it is already known that the ceremony will be held digitally for the first time in the history of the award.

The award has been held every two years for 16 years and celebrates projects of modern and innovative architecture from around the world, implemented using ceramic building materials - bricks, tiles, large-format blocks, paving stones, etc. The awards ceremony is traditionally held in Vienna, but this time the organizers decided to make an exception.

This season, 644 projects from 520 architects from 55 countries have nominated for the award. At the first stage, the "pre-jury", which included architecture journalists Anneke Bockern (Netherlands), Christian Hall (Germany) and Jonathan Glancy (Great Britain), selected 50 projects from the total array of applicants. There are no Russian projects in the shortlist. Now in the fall, a jury of world architects will choose the winners in the following nominations:

  • Feel at home (single-family houses, small housing projects of high architectural quality).
  • Living together (apartment buildings, innovative residential solutions taking into account the trends and problems of urbanization).
  • To work together (comfortable, aesthetic and functional offices, commercial and industrial buildings).
  • Be in the community (comfortable, aesthetic and functional public buildings for education, culture and health needs, public spaces and infrastructure projects).
  • Build outside the box (innovative concepts and ways of using bricks, as well as new building technologies).

The total prize fund is 26,500 euros. One of the winners will be awarded the Grand Prix. In addition, there is a special prize.

Below are some interesting Brick Award nominees projects. A complete list of finalists can be found here.

An independent jury guarantees an objective selection. The founder of the award, the Wienerberger concern, does not have the right to vote, and the names of the winners were not disclosed until the start of the event.

As in previous years, Wienerberger is preparing for publication a book entitled "Brick Book" that accompanies the architectural competition. It will feature 50 shortlisted projects and 5 essays by international authors with an overview of contemporary brick architecture. The cover is scheduled to be announced in mid-May.

You can learn more about the award on its website.

The expert jury for the Brick Award included five renowned architects from five countries:

  • Helena Glantz, Urban Design (Sweden), winner of the Brick Award 2018 in the category “Build outside the box”,
  • Toni Girones Saderra, Estudi d'Arquitectura Toni Gironès (Spain),
  • Tina Gregorik, Dekleva Gregoric Architects (Slovenia),
  • Mette Künné Fransen, Henning Larsen Architects A / S (Denmark),
  • Jonathan Sergison, Sergison Bates Architects (UK).
