In June, the third intensive course of MARCH, dedicated to the design of public spaces, ended. The school is conducting it together with the Wowhaus bureau, which has already reached the level at which not only designs public spaces, but invents new and successful typologies. On account of the bureau is Krymskaya Embankment, the children's area of the Moscow Zoo, the Museum Park, the city farm of VDNKh and many others.

For three months, a group of students, mostly already practicing architects, worked on one project - the concept of the Yauza development, paying special attention to the area between the Kurskaya and Ploschad Ilyicha metro stations.

“This year, teachers and students of the course“Designing Public Spaces”have set themselves an ambitious task: to master the Yauza, the“other river”of Moscow. We at MARSH have already dealt with the Yauza, having made the project "Another River" in the magistracy at ARCH Moscow five years ago. This time, using the rich experience of teachers from the Wowhaus bureau, it was possible to develop a comprehensive solution taking into account the serious problems of the ecology of the area, transport on the embankments, the prospects for the development of Hammer and Sickle and other problems of a city-wide scale. At the same time, two fragments of the riverine territory have been developed in detail, including landscaping and individual design solutions in the most complex and promising area of Artplay, "Kristall", MSTU im. Bauman and gateways. I think that many of the findings of the project could complement the concept of a linear park along the Yauza, from VDNKh to the Moscow Ring Road, which is currently being developed. An important idea of the program was the inclusion of individual territories in the city development strategy, and I am very glad that we have implemented it!"

“This year, we took for analysis a vast territory from the Zemlyanoy Val to the Third Transport Ring with adjoining territories, narrowed it down to a narrow strip adjacent directly to the banks of the Yauza River to develop a general idea, and allowed the participants to independently select individual areas for more detailed study. Surprisingly, they neglected this freedom and developed a coherent and coherent project, showing Stakhanov's hard work and proposing interesting and unique solutions for each site.

There have been more surprises and twists this year than ever before. The self-isolation regime overtook us two weeks after the start of the course: we had just started the analysis. I don’t want to resort to banal metaphors about a train at full speed, but this is exactly what happened to us. Only one thing was clear: online is not just the same thing, but through the screen, you need to rebuild both the form and the content. Despite the physical disunity, the participants showed amazing cohesion and by the end of the course they became a real team. And the curators, in turn, tried not only the new teaching format, but also spontaneous amateur psychotherapy. The result of these difficult three months turned out to be not just good, but enchanting. We have already begun to analyze the experience gained in extreme conditions and will definitely apply it in more peaceful times.

What will happen to the concept next is an open question. We were asked this question at the stage of interviews, but we deliberately avoided answering it. Within the framework of such short educational programs, one way or another, one is faced with finding a balance between how much knowledge the participants will gain and how detailed and presentable the final work will look like. In other words, between the education and the content of the finished images. We chose the first one. The second has improved."

Knowledge cloud and strategy

First stage: research work. The work was approached in a complex manner. In addition to the classical architectural analysis: the history of the place, the stages of its formation, the analysis of the transport situation, ecology and other things, MARSH lecturers, specialists of different profiles - from Yandex employees to the Ministry of Finance's NFI - helped to study the territory from several angles and take into account the interests of all stakeholders. As a result, the final presentation contains both the traditional "rivers of time" and an analysis of traffic flows, a map of sensations, a social cut, interviews with residents and tourists, and many other information.

In the process of collecting data, both obvious at first glance and deeper problems were clarified: the Yauza is heavily polluted, in some places it is difficult to access or is not connected with adjacent spaces, cut off by highways and, as a result, is not included in urban everyday life. Now the river has no image, while its potential is huge: three metro stations, three popular creative clusters - Winzavod, Armagh and Artplay; the famous Gogol Center and the Sakharov Center, as well as the heritage of earlier centuries - the Spaso-Andronikov monastery and viaduct, estates, the Syromyatnichesky hydroelectric complex.

The subjective impressions of the students also became part of the overall picture. Landscape architect Taisiya Silina published an essay on the project page in Medium, in the artistic form of which the knowledge gained has crystallized.

Yauza is a bit like a teenage girl - she seems to be a beauty, she seems to guess about it, but the spirit of rebelliousness prevents her from being friendly, she covers her face with her hair and turns on loud music in her headphones. It's scary to change, because you can lose your identity, become like everyone else. … I would like people to get the feeling that they are going to visit their grandmother while walking along the embankment, where there is an old wardrobe, a carpet on the wall, crystal and a cast-iron horse from the anniversary, where it smells of pies, where even "scary rockers" wash hands before dinner and eat with bread. … I see the future walking route as a transition from room to room, where every time you look at the river with different eyes.

Based on the collected data and in-depth interviews - there were about 20 of them, all in quarantine - the architects formed a portrait of the user. As a result of the entire analysis - design hypotheses on the functional content and architectural appearance of future spaces. A concept for two territories off the coast of the Yauza has been worked out in more detail, which takes into account environmental measures, new pedestrian and transport links, building regulations, identity and design of small architectural forms. The concept is based on the idea of an “urban enfilade”: since there are many different areas and layers of history on the Yauza, they decided not to unify the territory, but to maintain diversity by creating a system of space-rooms.

The first section includes a fragment of the river from the Artplay cluster to the Tupolev design bureau, seven spaces along this path will connect two pedestrian bridges. All of this is based on a transport solution to cover a fragment of the Third Transport Ring in the area of the Moscow State Technical University. Bauman and make a linear park.

According to the concept, the streets and the embankment next to Artplay come to life, the main character here becomes a super-MAF, which will embody everything at once - closed rooms, an amphitheater, swings, benches, flower beds, etc. At the Stroganovs' estate, a space with a different mood will be formed: the building will house a cultural and educational center, in front of it a garden with a pond and a labyrinth will be landscaped. The following points of attraction: an amphitheater on the embankment near the Customs Bridge, a public garden near the Syromyatnichesky hydroelectric complex, a tea and vodka in the former distilleries of the Kristall plant, a recreation area near the Tupolev Design Bureau. The length of the route will be three kilometers, the walk will take at least an hour, and then - as it goes.

Lefortovo palace

The fragment near the Lefortovo Palace has the character of an urban promenade: an embankment will appear over the Lefortovo tunnel, new squares will appear in front of the Moscow State Technical University and the palace, and a pedestrian bridge will connect these territories to the opposite green bank.

Thus, the river becomes accessible and turns into a symbol and a corridor that connects not only various spaces - from the university and the monastery to the design office, but also the people who come to them.

If we look closely at the structure of the city, we will see a series of parks, more or less obviously interconnected. In the southwest: the Setun River Valley, Vorobyovy Gory, Gorky Park and Zaryadye. In the northeast: the endless Elk Island, where the Yauza originates, spills into Sokolniki and VDNKh. This area along the river will be landscaped, and the Yauza Superpark will appear. Thus, the selected fragment is the missing link that would connect all these territories together. This project makes it possible to create the largest and longest park in the city, its green diameter, and an urban-scale park suite.
