In St. Petersburg, the results of the first all-Russian architectural Brick competition, organized by the ARCHITAIL company in conjunction with the Project Baltia magazine, were summed up. The competition was held in a "paper" format, the participants were offered to create their own versions of the brick style for a city or country house or public building. As part of the competition, an educational program was held, here you can listen to a lecture by Valentina Lelina on the history of brick architecture in St. Petersburg.

Applications were accepted for the competition from architects not older than 30 years old; a total of 67 projects were submitted from participants from 20 Russian cities. The best projects are presented at the exhibition at the Design District DAA, and we publish the work of the winners.

Brick as an element of archaic construction refers to the basic architectural forms. Since then, as a man took refuge in a cave created by nature, he was looking for a way to close, to secure his home. First a boulder, then a pile of stones. This is how the main man-made building - the wall - appeared. Over time, stones were replaced by comfortable bricks, and the wall already served not only as a barrier: closing itself, it formed a form, a building.

Moscow, as an object of attraction, on the one hand, lets in the streams of the masses, and on the other hand, it preserves the suburban foundations: “inside Sadovoye,” “five minutes from the center,” “outside the Moscow Ring Road”. Our project does not paint the image of Moscow as a city of advanced urbanism. On the contrary, we are responding to the demand for isolation by developing the medieval principle of urban development. It doesn't matter if Moscow is separated from Russia, or the country is tearing away the capital from itself. It is important that the conventional boundaries of the ring roads take the form of a monumental building, once and for all answering the question of where Moscow ends.

Bell ringers club in Valdai

Semyon Selyutin

The bell ringers' club on the central square of Valdai can turn into the main point of attraction for locals and tourists. The concept exploits and develops the Valdai Bells brand. The popularization of the bell ringing and the revival of the tradition of Russian brick architecture reinforce the city's identity. In the club, the bell ringing exists by itself, without connection with the religious context, therefore it is able to captivate any group of people. The external appearance is inspired by the image of the classical ward-type belfry: in the volume of plastered bricks, window openings appear, borrowed from the neighboring monasteries.

Brick country house

Residential house on the lake

Inna Klimenko

The single-family house is located in a picturesque place on the lake. Parents with two children spend a lot of time with each other, so in addition to bedrooms, a kitchen-dining room, bathrooms, dressing rooms and utility rooms, there is a spacious living room with a library, as well as a home cinema, a gym, a summer pavilion, a terrace with a pool and a boat garage. …

Brick allows you to make not only solid structures, but also curved perforated volumes. When laying, several masonry schemes are used, which, due to their pattern, make it possible to make each volume different from the other. So, for example, in the facing of orthogonal planes, stack and spoon masonry is used, and for a curved wall - openwork, based on spoon masonry.

The composition of the building is built around two themes: cubic volumes symbolize a stone, and a curved openwork plane passing through one of the volumes symbolizes water. The walls enclosing the courtyard with the pool and the boat hangar are also made in a similar technique. This solution allows you to ensure privacy and at the same time the connection of the person inside with the surrounding natural landscape.

Brick dream

Daniil Narinsky

Modern brick no longer strives to be a wall. He no longer needs to carry ceilings and roofs. Now he is texture, feeling, spirit. Brick in its original design fell asleep. We continue to use it as a memory, as an image of the world before modernism, concrete and aerated concrete, when the facade of the wall and its flesh were one. We support the brick, thin it to fit into new wall pies, invent subsystems to support it.

My project is the poeticization and problematization of the processes that occur with modern bricks. Nobody builds houses out of it - neither urban nor suburban. It is simply glued to the facade of the house, covering the insulation and concrete with a thin layer.

An observation tower made of bricks somewhere in the fields of Russia. The entire load is taken over by the metal frame, showing the role of the material in the modern world. There is no warm circuit here. Brick no longer serves physical heat. There is a spirit, a face, a form, this is what modern brick serves - it creates an image. Creates a wonderful dream.

Special prize from Project Baltia magazine

Theater and concert complex "Kuban Cossack Choir"

Karina Orlova

The goal of the authors of the project is to create a memorable image that conveys the character of the Cossacks and harmoniously fits into the historical building. The design site is surrounded by brick buildings, many of which are monuments of regional importance. This is the basis for the use of bricks in the project. The rhyme of the building with the surrounding historical buildings arises from the liveliness of hand-molded bricks.

In the main forms of the building, a storyline can be traced, revealing the history, traditions and worldview of the Cossack community. The stylobate embodies the collective image of the picturesque Kuban expanses. Its smooth curves symbolize the Kuban River, and the steps repeating the relief pattern evoke associations with the immense fields of the granary of Russia. The front part of the theater is formed by massive semi-cylindrical volumes, creating a metaphorical image of the Cossacks, standing shoulder to shoulder on the banks of the Kuban. The background of the unfolding plot is the plane of the wall with glazing imitating traditional embroidery.
