Proposals for the development of the territory near the Marine River Station in Arkhangelsk

My project is dedicated to the development of the territory of the Sea-River Railway Station in Arkhangelsk, the first largest city in the Arctic zone and the second in the Northwestern Federal District. It is located 30 m from the White Sea in the Northern Dvina delta. The harsh climate makes it impossible to enjoy the river all year round, but if the weather is fine, the whole city comes out with it. Undoubtedly, the river is a place of power, and the embankment is an outlet for the residents of Arkhangelsk, therefore it is extremely important to ensure its continuity and attractiveness for the townspeople.

The Sea-River Station (MRV) breaks the embankment in two and disrupts accessibility. It is located in the very center of the city, has open access ĸ and great potential for a recreational function. A large number of significant objects for the city are located within walking distance; three main streets with city and intercity routes intersect here. But the territory is empty and inhospitable: spontaneous steam is everywhere, an asphalt field instead of a city square, an incomprehensible geometry of intersections, and a lack of pedestrian connections.

It is impossible to improve this territory without first solving the problem of transport. My task is to make it pedestrian friendly, first of all. In my project, I narrowed the carriageway over the entire area to four lanes and, due to this, equipped parking lots and bicycle and pedestrian transit. The Trade Union Square area has become closed for transit vehicles, but accessible to pedestrians, tourist buses and car parking. Thus, the territory received more than 100 parking spaces, 1.5 m of bike paths, a waiting area for transport for 120 places, and the city's residents - endless happiness.

Daria Raspopina, co-founder and managing partner of the Center for Urban Projects "Shtab", tutor:

Misha did good in and Denie is the basis for further work: he analyzed the role and importance of the territory of the Sea-River Station on a city-wide scale and in the context of adjacent spaces, and also analyzed in detail the current and potential functions and their users. He also identified the problems and user scenarios that must be provided infrastructure, and provided outline infrastructure proposals that would be easy to develop during the concept development phase after more in-depth research and through the detailed study of all elements. Based on the needs of users, a course was taken to create a space convenient for pedestrians and people moving with the help of individual mobility devices, as well as to ensure the efficient operation of public transport, which is in line with generally accepted global trends in the field of urban mobility.

Environmental strategies for cloudy cities

Yakutsk, Murmansk, Petersburg, Moscow and many other cities are cloudy, over 100 days a year they are overcast. The season of sun starvation, the so-called "winter blues", lasts here from late autumn to early spring. Every fifth Russian faces the problems of a cloudy city: low tone, weak immunity, disturbance of circadian biorhythms, neuroses, depression. At the city level, this leads to an increase in suicide cases, deviant behavior, general morbidity, and an outflow of people. At the national level - to losses in the amount of 272 billion rubles.

Comprehensive environmental strategies for cloudy cities can mitigate these negative effects. The first step is an audit to identify deficiencies. For this, 4 sociological differentiating factors (identity, street activities, communities, public health) and 4 environmental factors (natural inclusion, light scenarios, color scenarios and spatial organization) are distinguished. They are subdivided into more detailed indicators, according to the sums of which a chart is drawn up. It is primarily proposed to improve the lowest indicator, whether it is a new landscaping strategy, a program of socio-cultural events or a new range of coloristic solutions for facades.

Dmitry Stupin, head of the concept group of the Brusnika construction company, graduate of the Architects.rf program in 2018, tutor:

We are so used to life in our cities that we do not realize how cloudy they are. This problem of not knowing affects our work, condition, feelings and thoughts on a daily basis. There are many cloudy cities, and the work on environmental strategies has shown this. If we are trying to understand the quality urban environment, the approaches and methods of working with it, then addressing the problem of cloudy cities is a step towards the awareness and honesty of our activities. A systematic view of the problem takes the discussion about cloudy cities from the category of "insignificant" to the level of significant ones, helps to determine specific tasks in working with the environment.

The concept of spatial development of the northern region in Voronezh

The project is dedicated to the development of a concept for the development of the territory of the former lands of the agrarian university, located in the northern region of Voronezh. The main idea of the project is to create a modern and sustainable multifunctional residential area while preserving the ecological uniqueness and identity of the place.

A quarterly planning structure with a clear division and hierarchy of the road network is the main planning principle of the concept. Central streets with active first floors, as well as intra-quarter thoroughfares, stand out. Closed quarters of variable number of storeys with a car-free courtyard area with well-developed landscaping are being created.

A key feature of the planning solution is the preservation and strengthening of the existing pedestrian links by including a network of wide green avenues in the planning structure. The project also provides for the creation of two local parks with active landscaping and developed recreational functions.

It is important to note that the project was developed in accordance with the standard for integrated development of territories, and the main technical and economic indicators fully correspond to the model of mid-rise buildings.

Daniil Khlebnikov, project manager at Strelka KB, founder of Space Lane, tutor:

One of the most difficult tasks in the Architects.rf program was the first stage - task formation. After all, it is not enough to choose a territory and understand what you want, you need to form a vision, highlighting the main indicators. Andrey simplified his task by taking the principles and models of the Standard for the Integrated Development of Territories as a basis, spending all the main time on working out architectural and planning solutions and building an economically sustainable model. The key idea of the whole project was the connection of the forest park with the territory of the microdistrict through a single green frame with new public spaces and reservoirs in the center.

Modern workspace in a residential neighborhood as a factor of environmental renewal

My project is a concept for the development of workspaces in neighborhoods. The situation with the pandemic only brightened up the recent labor market trends and emphasized the values identified in the study of a comfortable combination of work with other spheres of human life.

The concept is based on the available resources of the dense population and the possibilities of spaces in the microdistricts. It simultaneously solves the problem of the user, providing a workplace, and the problem of the city, developing a non-residential function in microdistricts. The study shows how the workspaces proposed by the concept can affect the daily rhythm of human life and renew the environment of the neighborhood.

Ekaterina Goncharova, project manager at Strelka KB, tutor:

Anna's project is an excellent example of how an urban-scale problem can be solved by tactical methods and primarily with the help of private stakeholders, and not the state or municipal authorities. In addition, Anna approached the development of the architectural concept as a product development - an in-depth analysis of the office and coworking market trends, user behavior was carried out, and a proposal was formed on this basis.

The topic has gained great relevance in connection with the experience of the pandemic. It allowed us to collect the most relevant data on the needs and behavior of people who were forced to adapt the spaces available to them for workplaces. Since the concept is based on in-depth analysis, it is of great interest to investors or business owners for the development of workspaces in the city. The study also provides an interesting overview of foreign experience - it made it possible to highlight the most current trends in the internal organization of offices, and, on their basis, to find strengths in the spaces that are available in Russian microdistricts.

Towards a Democratic Design Approach

Danil Arefiev, Yekaterinburg

Group "Educational projects and platforms"

My research project is an essay on Democratic Design. Today the context is changing and the role of the architect is changing too. By changing the context, we can understand the multitude of transformations taking place in different spheres of society, affecting a qualitatively new transition from industrial values to post-industrial ones. This transition cannot but have an impact on changes in approaches to design and urban planning.

Among the post-industrial values of society that are of direct importance for design, we can clearly distinguish the demand for diversity (choice) and the demand for participation. They both hold true, but lack correlation with the prevalent directive top-down design model that has been fairly comfortable in previous historical iterations. This suggests that design approaches will adapt and change, responding primarily to the social prerequisites of change.

The forms of citizen participation in design can be divided into two groups: direct - involving direct involvement, and representative - based on sociological and anthropological research. Despite the fact that the forms of direct participation of citizens in design are developing and finding their support, it seems obvious that in the current historical formation they will be limited. In addition, direct participation has a disadvantage - unrepresentative sampling. And we have an inverted property qualification. If earlier the right to participate or the right to vote determined the availability of a particular real estate or capital, then in the case of participatory design, exactly the opposite happens - the working population, generating financial resources and paying for improvements directly or through taxes, is least of all involved in participatory design. In the foreseeable future, the municipality, developers and architects will continue to be the main actors in urban development.

Developers are most interested in a representative form of participation. Their task is to coordinate capital, land and labor resources in order to change the urban fabric. The basis for this change is meeting changing needs. Democratic design recognizes the role of the developer as an essential decentralized source of new urban solutions and innovation. The role of the municipality is to create a legal framework for developers to use forms of direct and representative citizen participation in the design process.

For the architect, the basis for structural changes in the approach to design and its democratization lies in changing the strategy of pre-project research. In the Russian top-down approach, all pre-project research is formalized in the terms of reference, which is based on the regulatory framework. This approach can be contrasted with an American social research strategy or a project brief, which translates social prerequisites into an architectural program, that is, implements a bottom-up strategy.

Democratization of design is a flexible basis for the diversity of urban form and humane urban space.

Sofya Sobol, head of regional programs, Strelka Institute, tutor:

As part of group work on educational and educational projects, Danil explored the issues of democratizing design. In this work, the main social prerequisites of the ongoing changes were analyzed and disclosed and a critical assessment of their impact on the design process was carried out. We saw and heard what role is assigned to each actor of urban development (developer, municipality and architect) and what models of their interaction are possible. Some of the findings of this work are thought-provoking and open to debate. For example, the recognition of the developer's role as one of the most important in the development of democratic project approaches. Such comprehension and reflection allows the participant of the educational program to expand the framework of the perception of his profession and shows that it is important not only the material embodiment of architectural projects in life, but also the very approach to their development. I would like to thank Danil again for this work!
