Gelfshtyn is second only to Prague Castle among the Czech castles in size, but this building of the Gothic and Renaissance eras has survived to this day in the form of ruins, albeit very spectacular. However, in 2014, even they threatened to collapse, and the castle had to be closed for visiting. The architects from the nearby Olomouc - atelier-r were commissioned to restore Gelfshtyn and make it more convenient and interesting.
It was necessary to make any new additions distinguishable at first glance from the old parts, so modern materials were chosen - glass in the form of ceilings, corten steel and polished concrete.
The monument guard was allowed to make a transparent roof on steel beams only in a few rooms, and so that it was not visible from the outside - although the customers, the authorities of the Olomouc Region, would like to block all the spaces of the castle. The architects opted for frosted glass because it is easier to follow, and the slightly diffused light coming through it matches well with the exposure. Only above the chapel, the ceilings are transparent to remind of the "heavenly" function of space.
The staircases and bridges for visitors were made of corten steel: it matches well in texture with the stonework of the ancient walls. This, average in height, level also plays the role of overlappings for a part of the castle. For the first time, such passages allowed visitors to examine the ruins "from above", from the level of the now disappeared roof, and also to approach the monument unusually close.
At ground level, in the covered parts, new walkways and platforms are made of polished concrete, the rest of the space is covered with gravel.
The preparation for the development of the project deserves special mention: to begin with, a 3D model of the castle was made based on thousands of photographs taken by a drone. They made it possible to create a "map" of all types of plaster and masonry in Gelfshtyn.
