Canning Town is located in the east of the metropolis, next to the dock area, where active new construction has been going on since the 1980s. But Cunning Town was not affected by these changes, and now, in accordance with its history as a slum district, it is one of the most disadvantaged not only in the capital, but throughout Britain. Its inhabitants suffer from serious health problems, poverty and poor education.
To change the situation, a 20-year renovation program with a budget of £ 3.7 billion was adopted. It involves the construction of 10,000 apartments and the creation of two new community centers.
It includes the reconstruction of the so-called. "Zone 7 Canning", which became the subject of the competition. The winner was a team of planners EDAW, FLACQ, Maccreanor Lavington Architects and Dyer, David Adjaye and Terry Farrell's workshops, along with developers Bouygues and One Housing Group. All these architects, very different in design and style, will occupy 6.4 hectares of the territory, working on the basis of the master plan of Erik van Egeraat. It is planned to create a residential area with 1,100 apartments and 60,000 m2 of shops, offices, entertainment facilities, as well as a supermarket there. The new construction is expected to create jobs for local residents, and the renovation program as a whole will change Canning Town "physically, socially and economically".
