Built in 1830, this structure is considered the longest promenade pier in the world, reaching 1.33 miles (2.14 km) in length. At the opposite end from the coast, a platform was originally located - the so-called. the head of the pier - with a cafe, a souvenir shop and other places intended for tourists. In October 2005, the pier experienced a serious fire, from which it was his "head" that suffered in the first place.
The city authorities made a decision not only to restore it, but to turn it into an independent attraction with wider possibilities of recreational use. For this purpose, an international competition was announced, in which 73 workshops took part. The 5 finalists included HOK, Katherine Findlay's Bureau and Wilkinson Air; the victory was won by the architects White.
Their project, presented under the motto "Created by Wind and Wave", involves transforming the pier into a modern public space. The new structures on the final platform will not only be used to house a cafe, a gift shop, traders' stalls, infrastructure facilities, but will also be able to serve for concerts and social events. There is also the possibility of landscaping the "head" of the pier.
