We are talking about the free space between the TV tower and the Schlossplatz square, where the "recreated" Stadtschloss palace is to appear in the future. Until 2012, the construction of the 5th metro line will be carried out there, but no decisions have been made regarding the more distant future.
To stimulate public discussion about this area, which has so far received the conditional name "Rathaus Forum" (Berlin's Red City Hall is located nearby), the construction director of the Metropolitan Senate Regula Lüscher commissioned a team of architects from the Berlin branch of David Chipperfield's bureau, the Graft workshops and Kiefer Landschaftsarchitektur to develop several alternative proposals for the use of the key space for the center of Berlin for the benefit of the citizens.
It should be noted that if earlier it was proposed to restore the medieval layout of streets with modern buildings at the Rathaus Forum, then all five new projects involve the creation of open public space of various types there.
According to the Coastal Terraces option, this entire area will be flooded with water and the resulting reservoir will be connected to the Spree. Wide embankments with terraces will be created on its banks, and bridges will be thrown across it.
The "Archaeological Garden" is supposed to open the foundations of medieval buildings on the territory in front of the Red City Hall.
According to the City Park project, the entire Rathaus Forum should be turned into a green space, while the City Stage implies the creation of an open area framed by arcades for various social events and performances.
The Esplanade combines the two previous options: the open space in the center is surrounded by trees.
