Five reservoirs on the banks of the Huangpu River were left from Longhua Airport, turned into a waste container. For six years, they and the adjacent territory of just under 5 hectares were turned into a park and art center Tank Shanghai: it opened in March 2019 and has become extremely popular over the past year.
This, the authors of the project explain, is facilitated by the deliberate absence of borders - neither external nor internal. Lawns freely descend to Huangpu, access to which was previously closed here, interspersed with forest and water areas. Three of the five reservoirs are sunk into this lawn: it "climbs" onto the roof of the volumes attached to them.
The first tank has been converted into a two-tiered concert venue with a bar. A smaller cylinder is inserted into it to achieve the desired acoustics. No. 2 accommodates a restaurant with an open courtyard-terrace in the center. The third was hardly rebuilt: it is a hall for large sculptures or installations with an oculus in the ceilings. This opening can be battened down, or it can be opened to let in not only the sun, but also the rain. The fourth volume accommodated traditional gallery halls, and number five is cut by an elongated rectangular volume, forming two stages at the ends.
In addition to the fuel tanks, the architects also created two new exhibition halls: the "Mirror Gallery" with corresponding facades and a multifunctional "project space".
