This building, considered the tallest tent structure in the world (150 m), is an asymmetric "tent" made of a transparent three-layer polymer shell. It covers an area of 10 hectares with an artificial climate, which should become an all-season public space - a recreational area for the capital of Kazakhstan. There is a full-fledged city park, shops, cafes, restaurants, cinemas, exhibition and concert spaces, and a water park is located on the upper terrace.
Despite the frivolous purpose of the building, it has been entrusted with an urban planning role: "Khan Shatyr" closes the central axis of the Astana plan from the north and is currently the tallest building in the city.
It also demonstrates a variety of technological innovations: to prevent ice from forming on the inner surface of the building envelope during harsh winters, a multi-stage temperature control system is used and directed streams of warm air up the walls of the tent, which should also prevent the downward flow of cold air.
In order to prevent overheating in summer, the outer layer of the shell is made not completely transparent: this will provide the necessary filtration of the sun's rays. Inside, the space will be cooled by directed jets of cold air and opening openings in the upper part of the shell. However, how “green” Khan Shatyr will be, given the use of forced ventilation in its huge areas, the architects do not report.
