The architect will work on the project for the Center for Contemporary Art, which is part of the multifunctional complex Chengdu Tianfu Square, which his developers ETG call the largest building in the world (total area 1.5 million m2).
It will combine offices, a conference center and a commercial exhibition center, a huge shopping center (300 thousand m2), a hotel with 1,000 rooms and a water park for 20,000 visitors at a time. As an addition, which should attract tourists interested in culture, the center commissioned by Hadid will act: it will include a museum of modern art (30,000 m2), an exhibition hall (12,000 m2) and a theater for 1,800 spectators.
So far, only a preliminary design of this structure has become known, the final version will be presented to the public no earlier than early next year. Nevertheless, ETG, the largest in China and supported in its projects for Chengdu by the government developing the western regions of the PRC lagging behind the coastal regions, plans to open the entire complex no later than in a few years, possibly even in 2012.
